T87
Oh, why must you tempt me so? Open borders are good for us both, but I can get trade routes elsewhere if the buffet is open here... No garrison in the city, the worker on the horses is uncovered, same with the two workers on the forest 1E. I mean, wuh? You basically have to attack here, right??
I can see that Dhal has researched Iron Working, whether by choice or necessity I don't know, but putting hammers into that rather than economy means I'm even further ahead economically than if he had dumped those beakers into Currency. He is small, and technologically inferior, so time is on my side here. But do I really want to give Dhal a goal? He isn't going to win, but he could be determined to spike my tires. Over a city raze or worker steal? Possibly. But this is too blatantly bad not to at least try to punish.
Dhal is militarily in no position to do anything to me soon, and can he spare resources on a naval build up? He is leagues behind in crop yield and MFG and would be fighting a technologically superior opponent, a sure recipe for disaster.
So then, yes, plunge in. Alt + click, move the galley into position and what's this? Well damn. This is my third log in of the turn in an attempt to play. In my first aborted session, I forgot that I had used my movement point on the archer by loading it back onto the galley. I regret ever landing the archer now, but I would have had no way of knowing this turn without doing so that this area is (seemingly) entirely bereft of defenders.
This is probably for the best, though, because I'm not clear on turn order since I logged in before, during, and after Dhal this turn, and he usually plays after me. So, now we have a clearly defined turn split. Dhal first, then me. I declared but did not attack, so I think this buffer turn is fine. I notified Dhal and LP (for disclosure of out of game contact) via PM that I had declared end of turn 87 and would take second half, but that no combat had occurred. I hope this is ok, I really hadn't planned on war but I can hardly ignore this situation.
Anyway, here's the rest of my cities. A settler due soon from Yellowstone for whales, before Nakor's culture grabs them, then another soon from Grant Village for the deer/2x sheep/horse city south of Madison. Another worker and then a settler out of Lamar Valley for clams/wheat/wines SE of Lamar. However, I may swap that to a settler at LV and walk it to the west of my empire to settle first ring for the marble across the channel from Caledorn's newest city.
Caledorn's city is 1N of the chariot and settling party in this screen shot. He'll still have a decent city, but I'll keep the marble. It is interesting to me that he did not opt to settle on the hill and take the border horse and leave the fish for another city. I could squeeze in a culturally superior city on the hill 1S of the horse and really put pressure on his new city, but I'll take the horse from across the channel. Perhaps, we'll see how this works out. Really, it depends on how soon I can get my galley back over here and what I find across the channel when I do. I think Nakor is expanding more north than south at the moment, and this is a little further from wetbandit than he can control just now.
A city shot while I waited out a log in attempt. Double whipped this turn and finally not running a GS. I'm only going to finish the GS just the turn before I'll use it. I don't want to pay unit maintenance unnecessarily, and I don't want to tip my hand on bulbing. The worker/worker/settler or worker/settler builds will allow me time to finally lay down some cottages here. This will most likely be my NE city, and is also where I hope to build the Great Library after the run to Philosophy. Ordinarily I would not bother with GL, but with my Classic Literature quest I really have to at least try. This is the primary reason for attempting to settle the marble city.
Grant Village is nearly grown. I'll have its first mine ready in 2t and will continue the transition from food to hammers here. I'm planning on Ankor Wat here, but if no one builds Mids by the time I get the forge down and the forests prechopped, that is an easy diversion. Bonus fail gold is still better than wealth, as long as I don't waste all of my forests by chopping them too early.
With no tech selected, my GNP was 134 (#2). So I'm a good leap ahead of the field right now. This is what gives me hope that I still have time to win the Great Library and perhaps even the artist at Music. My current tech path is (at a very conservative break even tech rate) Meditation (EoT 87), PH (1), CoL (4), bulb Philosophy then probably Metal Casting (4T: I'll need to have forges in place to really get the wonder builds completed on time), Masonry (1T: I need to hook up both stone and marble for Mids/AW and GL, also a requirement for Monotheism), Polytheism (2t: Prereq for Literature), Monotheism (2t), Aesthetics (4t), Literature (4t), then Music if it is still available. This ignores Calendar for a very long time, which admittedly would help me (I have silk and incense), as well as Construction for cats. But this neighborhood is feeling very soft and isolated, so I think I can manage without them. If I need them, I'll divert. Happiness will be improved with forges because I have gold and gems already and will have almost certainly have secured my silver by this time. The biggest omission is Civil Service, and really I'll want that and Monarchy by the end of my golden age. I'll have a Great Scientist (my third) ready out of Fishing Bridge by around T102. Current research capacity would enable me to research Monarchy in 4t and Civil Service in 12t, so this is possible by the end of a golden age.
This is a bit of ambitious reaching for all the candy, but I'm going to give it a go anyway. As I said earlier, I'll scrap these plans for a run at the Pyramids if I have Grant Village ready to go (stone hooked, forge built, Organized Religion available) at the Mids haven't fallen. Then I'll queue up chops and go for it, but I don't really need to change my tech priority to do this. I have to be able to have a rapid build, and that means getting hammer multipliers all set up first. If I miss the mids, I'll be happy with Ankor Wat and will spread the faith far and wide for a super shrine. In my sandbox, it most frequently lands in Grant Village, conveniently, and then somewhat less often in Lake, which also has good hammer potential to get commerce multipliers in place, as well as having room for cottage. Either would be a great location and would allow me to churn out missionaries quickly.
That's all for now. Have a snicker in the lurker thread about too much ambition and the best laid plans of mice and accountants. Old Harry said elsewhere (retep's PB21 thread) recently that micro is for nerds. He may not be wrong, but the eternal sandboxing and spreadsheet micro plan really have improved my play and I'm enjoying this immensely. It's hard not to feel good about my position right now, especially with this group of neighbors. A single Plako or Team Badass civ around me would completely change my outlook, but they're notably absent so I'm feeling good right now.
