[SPOILERS] This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land. But Mostly Mine.

T87

Oh, why must you tempt me so? Open borders are good for us both, but I can get trade routes elsewhere if the buffet is open here... No garrison in the city, the worker on the horses is uncovered, same with the two workers on the forest 1E. I mean, wuh? You basically have to attack here, right?? eek

I can see that Dhal has researched Iron Working, whether by choice or necessity I don't know, but putting hammers into that rather than economy means I'm even further ahead economically than if he had dumped those beakers into Currency. He is small, and technologically inferior, so time is on my side here. But do I really want to give Dhal a goal? He isn't going to win, but he could be determined to spike my tires. Over a city raze or worker steal? Possibly. But this is too blatantly bad not to at least try to punish.

Dhal is militarily in no position to do anything to me soon, and can he spare resources on a naval build up? He is leagues behind in crop yield and MFG and would be fighting a technologically superior opponent, a sure recipe for disaster.

So then, yes, plunge in. Alt + click, move the galley into position and what's this? Well damn. This is my third log in of the turn in an attempt to play. In my first aborted session, I forgot that I had used my movement point on the archer by loading it back onto the galley. I regret ever landing the archer now, but I would have had no way of knowing this turn without doing so that this area is (seemingly) entirely bereft of defenders.

This is probably for the best, though, because I'm not clear on turn order since I logged in before, during, and after Dhal this turn, and he usually plays after me. So, now we have a clearly defined turn split. Dhal first, then me. I declared but did not attack, so I think this buffer turn is fine. I notified Dhal and LP (for disclosure of out of game contact) via PM that I had declared end of turn 87 and would take second half, but that no combat had occurred. I hope this is ok, I really hadn't planned on war but I can hardly ignore this situation.

Anyway, here's the rest of my cities. A settler due soon from Yellowstone for whales, before Nakor's culture grabs them, then another soon from Grant Village for the deer/2x sheep/horse city south of Madison. Another worker and then a settler out of Lamar Valley for clams/wheat/wines SE of Lamar. However, I may swap that to a settler at LV and walk it to the west of my empire to settle first ring for the marble across the channel from Caledorn's newest city.

Caledorn's city is 1N of the chariot and settling party in this screen shot. He'll still have a decent city, but I'll keep the marble. It is interesting to me that he did not opt to settle on the hill and take the border horse and leave the fish for another city. I could squeeze in a culturally superior city on the hill 1S of the horse and really put pressure on his new city, but I'll take the horse from across the channel. Perhaps, we'll see how this works out. Really, it depends on how soon I can get my galley back over here and what I find across the channel when I do. I think Nakor is expanding more north than south at the moment, and this is a little further from wetbandit than he can control just now.

A city shot while I waited out a log in attempt. Double whipped this turn and finally not running a GS. I'm only going to finish the GS just the turn before I'll use it. I don't want to pay unit maintenance unnecessarily, and I don't want to tip my hand on bulbing. The worker/worker/settler or worker/settler builds will allow me time to finally lay down some cottages here. This will most likely be my NE city, and is also where I hope to build the Great Library after the run to Philosophy. Ordinarily I would not bother with GL, but with my Classic Literature quest I really have to at least try. This is the primary reason for attempting to settle the marble city.

Grant Village is nearly grown. I'll have its first mine ready in 2t and will continue the transition from food to hammers here. I'm planning on Ankor Wat here, but if no one builds Mids by the time I get the forge down and the forests prechopped, that is an easy diversion. Bonus fail gold is still better than wealth, as long as I don't waste all of my forests by chopping them too early.

With no tech selected, my GNP was 134 (#2). So I'm a good leap ahead of the field right now. This is what gives me hope that I still have time to win the Great Library and perhaps even the artist at Music. My current tech path is (at a very conservative break even tech rate) Meditation (EoT 87), PH (1), CoL (4), bulb Philosophy then probably Metal Casting (4T: I'll need to have forges in place to really get the wonder builds completed on time), Masonry (1T: I need to hook up both stone and marble for Mids/AW and GL, also a requirement for Monotheism), Polytheism (2t: Prereq for Literature), Monotheism (2t), Aesthetics (4t), Literature (4t), then Music if it is still available. This ignores Calendar for a very long time, which admittedly would help me (I have silk and incense), as well as Construction for cats. But this neighborhood is feeling very soft and isolated, so I think I can manage without them. If I need them, I'll divert. Happiness will be improved with forges because I have gold and gems already and will have almost certainly have secured my silver by this time. The biggest omission is Civil Service, and really I'll want that and Monarchy by the end of my golden age. I'll have a Great Scientist (my third) ready out of Fishing Bridge by around T102. Current research capacity would enable me to research Monarchy in 4t and Civil Service in 12t, so this is possible by the end of a golden age.

This is a bit of ambitious reaching for all the candy, but I'm going to give it a go anyway. As I said earlier, I'll scrap these plans for a run at the Pyramids if I have Grant Village ready to go (stone hooked, forge built, Organized Religion available) at the Mids haven't fallen. Then I'll queue up chops and go for it, but I don't really need to change my tech priority to do this. I have to be able to have a rapid build, and that means getting hammer multipliers all set up first. If I miss the mids, I'll be happy with Ankor Wat and will spread the faith far and wide for a super shrine. In my sandbox, it most frequently lands in Grant Village, conveniently, and then somewhat less often in Lake, which also has good hammer potential to get commerce multipliers in place, as well as having room for cottage. Either would be a great location and would allow me to churn out missionaries quickly.

That's all for now. Have a snicker in the lurker thread about too much ambition and the best laid plans of mice and accountants. Old Harry said elsewhere (retep's PB21 thread) recently that micro is for nerds. He may not be wrong, but the eternal sandboxing and spreadsheet micro plan really have improved my play and I'm enjoying this immensely. It's hard not to feel good about my position right now, especially with this group of neighbors. A single Plako or Team Badass civ around me would completely change my outlook, but they're notably absent so I'm feeling good right now. jive

WAAARRRrrr...dotdotdotdotdot

So, in the end, the decision about what to attack was kind of made for me.

me: Hello.
LP: Hi
me: so my availability is actually shrinking, having to leave earlier than anticipated. my wife just called and is on her way home
I hate to force dhal into an early turn, so maybe it is better if you play my side when you can?
i declared since he played, so if he hasn't checked the forum he won't know he's on a split
LP: Okay, will play now
me: i can log in and do my domestic moves and then you'd only have the combat theater to worry over for me
that would let dhal play his own turn and you just play mine closer to the timer if you are going to be available.
btw, I'm US east coast, I believe you're NZ?
LP: yeah, I'm NZ
So you're suggesting I play your turn, and let Dhal play his turn?
me: just over 3h left on the timer. would you be available then in case dhal had not played?
LP: Alternatively I could play Dhal's turn and you can play your own turn
Would rather not have to end up playing both of your turns
Dhal's not necessarily around, you definitely are
me: yeah. dhal seems to not mind so much, i just don't want to annoy him bc he may have not known.
i agree that you shouldn't play both sides.
LP: In that case I'll play Dhal's turn
me: I'd say go on and play for him, with my apologies.
i did PM him this morning.
i'll be back in a few minutes. if you would, message here when you've finished for dhal
LP: Okay
Sent at 6:11 PM on Wednesday
LP: Played for Dhal
Sent at 6:30 PM on Wednesday
LP: You should be good now
Looks like he's just online now, so he might take a quick look first
Sent at 6:31 PM on Wednesday
me: ok
aer you done with unit moves in the relevant area?
LP: Yep
me: ok. thanks!
wife is about an hour ahead of schedule tonight, that threw me off
LP: no worries
me: I'm eager to log in to see if the worker buffet is still open.
Sent at 6:37 PM on Wednesday
me: ugh. a frightful choice. a worker or a city?????
Sent at 6:38 PM on Wednesday
LP: heh
I was quite confused why you had a Galley there but hadn't already unloaded, so I presumed it was empty
Sent at 6:41 PM on Wednesday
me: ha. no, and i almost warned you that i nuked OB to move in
do you think this was an unfair mistake against Dhal?
i have not moved the war units yet
LP: Not sure exactly how you moved, as long as it was after Dhal I don't see a problem though
Sent at 6:49 PM on Wednesday
me: well, there was an issue with logins last turn. i logged in before dhal and did domestic things, had to look up a micro detail. logged in again later and dhal was in game but i was unable to move anything due to another player logging in. I closed Civ because I couldn't wait any longer.
i then declared war later on in the turn on a subsequent log in but did not attack any units, just alt click to establish turn order
Sent at 6:51 PM on Wednesday
LP: ah right
so that's why the Galley didn't unload troops
Sent at 6:53 PM on Wednesday
me: I'm a little conflicted TBH.
i don't want to take advantage of lurker lack of situational awareness
i suppose a compromise would be to just take the worker, it is ultimately less damaging to him than to kill the city
Sent at 6:56 PM on Wednesday
LP: heh, would have moved the Worker away if I'd known about it
probably better to ask Dhal... I suspect he wouldn't mind too much though, he seems fairly easygoing
me: well, there is only one tile you could have moved the worker to and not have me capture anyway
if that had happened i would just raze the city
had you known the galley was loaded (dhal would have known), would you have moved the worker away from the coast?
i know you're a good tactician, so you wouldn't fail to notice geography and galley capability.
did you move any units besides the worker differently that would have been able to cover the city?
i think I'm forced to conclude that the city would have been the only viable target
take a moment and work it over, i'll be back in about 5 minutes
a refresher if needed:

LP: Yeah, if I'd known the Galley was loaded I would have moved the Worker off the coast... the lack of attack threw me though, I couldn't see any reason for that unless it wasn't loaded.
There were no units able to cover the city that turn.
Sent at 7:02 PM on Wednesday
me: and you didn't know that I had nuked open borders to war dec.
looks like it has to be a city raze then.
ok, enough effete liberal hand-wringing by me.
LP: what do you mean by "nuked open borders", incidentally?
hehe
me: yeah. i could have passed through if it had been a simple scouting war dec
ok, bye bye coventry
Sent at 7:10 PM on Wednesday
me: ok, done, leaving home. thanks for your help.
LP: no worries

tl;dr version: I wasn't 100% sure that LP had contextual knowledge to make the best decisions on the turn. I didn't know whether he knew that I declared despite having open borders, making it much more likely that the move was aggressive rather than necessary for scouting. LP confirmed that he did not know about the OB and that he would have moved the workers differently (my guess was to the one tile I could not reach via galley/disembarkation), and thus the only target that I would have had remaining would be to raze the city. Last, Dhal knew I had at least an archer because I landed it two turns ago and reloaded the following turn, then declared war.

Ok then.

Logging in, nothing looks like it has changed, so decision time (before the chat with Parkin above). Honestly, I would have rather taken the worker and called it a day. I can always use more workers and it is less of a loss to Dhal, meaning it is less likely (in theory) that he will hold a grudge over this than me killing his city. But whatever, he should have covered this stuff up. There's no one else to blame. crazyeye

As seen above, after talking it over with Parkin, the only fair thing to do was to raze the city. Dhal had no units in range to prevent this, while Parkin could have moved the western worker to the forest NE of the city, its only safe refuge. The 6g doesn't even cover lost trade route income, but I've opened borders with others to compensate for the lost income. Wetbandit in particular is benefiting from open borders. I'm afraid I've helped pull his economy out of the muck, but he's a bit further away, so whatever.

I've started moving the galley closer to home. I will need to get it into position in the west in time for a marble city around T100.

Wetbandit vs. Q'zantium/Lexiland. Fight it out!! hammer

Me vs. Dhal? mischief

Elsewhere, a barb axe has popped up near Grant Village. I took a combat1 promo on my axe and should kill it next turn when the barb moves to the wheat tile. In case I die, the archer should be able to clean up. If not, I'll be very annoyed. This is what happens when I send my chariot to scout. duh

Someone else went ahead and offered OB to everyone in the neighborhood. Giving away tons of free money there! I am too, but I need to fill out my trade routes.

I'm leaving town for about 10 days but I'm taking a laptop so I shouldn't need anyone to cover turns. Reporting may not be quite as good though. Adios!

In case I can't get steam and the mod issue sorted out, someone can play my turn. Keep to the micro plan, you can find it by clicking on the turn number for any recent turn report. I intend to bring the dhal war galley back home and move with all possible speed toward the western marble. Drop the archer off on the stone island for a second garrison. I offered dhal peace last turn, no idea if he accepted, but withdraw anyway unless he's left an uncovered worker for me to steal. Don't go out of the most direct path home to find one.

One of the chariots exploring Caledorn should come home, probably the southern one but use best judgement with preference for exploring his land as much as speedily possible.

Tech should finish CoL, a GS should be ready in Lamar Valley. Just move it away from the coast, it will bulb philosophy next turn. UNLESS SOMEONE HAS ALREADY TAKEN PHILOSOPHY/TAOISM. Check first.

Ignore any new open border requests, I have enough routes for now. Ruff requested but I'm not looking to help him any since he killed my scout. I countered with OB + 4g/t last turn and I doubt he'll take it.

If stone city is finished with its build I think a worker should come next despite what the micro plan says, but maybe at size 3, so LH next then probably swap. I won't have a good way to hook stone up without a homemade worker here.

That's all, I wish I had been able to plan for this outage better but the tech situation here is not good with my family in Georgia.

Managed to get my turn played so I should be fine playing turns for the week. It will be a miracle if I don't misclick my civ into oblivion on this laptop. bang

Went ahead and played the next turn before I lost the chance to do so. No misclicks, bulbed Philosophy. Taoism landed in Grant Village like I had hoped it would. I got a Buddhist spread this turn Lake, the other most likely location, greatly assisting Grant Village's chances. I'm sending the free missionary to Lake and will hope I don't get a fail, then build a monastery and start churning out missionaries. In about 10-12t I'll be able to revolt to OR/Caste and swap into Taoism when I fire the golden age. I'll be in bureaucracy and HR by the end of the GA.

Pindicator, thanks for killing "Barry". I wish you could kill them harder than dead. nono

My civ is still alive, but I'm still on vacation away from anything resembling a reportable situation. I'm honestly glad for the delay that has prevented me relying on a sub to play turns. I'll return to regular reports on Tuesday. Nothing scintillating has happened, mostly all quiet in the freshman quarters of the PB18 campus for me.

Cheers all. If anyone wants to chat about why I hate "Barry" so much, reply here and help me drive up my post count. I'll be back in a few days, but for now, I'm just glad that civ is on the way out. I like for people to know who they are actually playing against. rolleye

Okay, looks like everything's in your spreadsheet except whether to tech at 0% or 100% this turn. Probably pretty important. Will switch to 100% unless I hear otherwise, based on the past treasury pattern. smile

EDIT: No instructions for Worker B either, will move him 1NE to complete the road started by Worker C. smile

EDIT 2: Had to unload a Chariot onto the continent to the north in order to make room for the Settler to board the Galley.

Turn 97

Followed Worker instructions, except those missing for Worker B - moved him 1NE and finished the road.

Unloaded the Chariot so the Settler could be added to the boat. Chose the Chariot rather than the Axe since that way on T98 you can still have all units on the same tile.

Turned up research to 100% after debating it for a while. At no point during the last 60 turns have you stored more than 250 gold at any time, so I figured you more likely than not intended to switch to 100%. Apologies if this wasn't your intention. smile

Whipped Grant Village as indicated in the spreadsheet, despite it having the Settler at 98/100. I guess you want the overflow hammers.

Not sure what you want to do with that Settler - the spot marked with an "x" to the southwest is no longer accessible unless you want to declare war on Caledorn and attempt to raze Opal. Might I suggest 1E of that location instead? Or did you want to head south to the Silver/Wheat spot?

Switched tiles at Canyon to work two of the nicer cottages (2c vs 1c) at Grant Village.

I've been taking pictures for most turns, so I'll throw them up here and then try to figure out where things stand now with the current turn. Apologies in advance for the numerous individual city screens, I needed these to try to keep my sandbox up to date. That's going to take a little while. scared

Mostly lost to the annals of history. This is all that remains, but it requires RB Mod 2.0.6.2, a rare species.

Taoism failed to spread with the free missionary at Lake. banghead It was always a risk, but a low odds one, to use the free missionary in one of my two cities that had already had a Buddhist spread. Shrug.

Mardoc is sending out a peaceful exploration galley. I'd be concerned if I did not have third ring borders here, but if he declares I have a turn to whip in a defender. His best play would be to land a couple galleys on the forest across from the river but I'm wagering that he doesn't have two axes on board. I'm still playing it very thin on defense, but graphs show that Mardoc has similar power levels and I think he's more a builder type, not a raze and antagonize type (apparently like I was to Dhal...). We'll see, but I think I'm ok here. I hope so, I only have a warrior here since I sent the archer to scout out his new island city, Blue, just visible through the interface at the bottom.

Building hordes of units. Wait, nope.

More to come...

Mardoc didn't attack. I'm intentionally working the coast tile this turn so I can whip the settler next turn for max overflow into the forge on the following turn. This is where I want to build The Great Library, so the forge needs to go up quickly. I'll do a series of whips if needed, I'll get the happiness back from the forge.

Looks like I got the free Taoism spread on T92. More please! jive

I got graphs (back?) on someone this turn, so I took some screenshots. Mardoc bulked up his defense some, but I'll let the water protect me for now. Subsequent events prove to me that I have nothing to fear from him just now.... Azza..dot.

I continue to prioritize working cottages overlapping the capital even if they have lower commerce yields than alternative tiles.

I can't be sure exactly what I was intending to show here, but it may be that Lexi'Q-zantium had fought wetbandit in the NW of this shot, apparently with Lexi'Q taking a city off of wetbandit. Either that or they settled on his side of the pond and he made them pay for it. Which should make me ponder whether I should be aiming to take the marble over there, but it won't. I really wish there was a way to temporarily toggle the signposts off. smoke

T95

Rapid cottaging continues apace around Canyon and West Yellowstone. Lamar Valley (GP city), Lake (hammers) , and Grant Village (hammers) are continuing to incubate cottages for these primary commerce cities. Fishing Bridge will be a production city soon, once workshops are viable, as will wee Mammoth in the north. In the southwest, Madison is forming the beginning of a commerce city, though it can workshop some tiles as well.

Free Taoism spread! Cha-Ching (40h)!!! dancing

The market and settler are on hold until Yellowstone grows to size 9. I'll have whales online at Mammoth for the additional happiness. At size 9, it's back to working the shitty plains cottage as I build a settler. I'll give the southern cottage back to Canyon.

I don't remember what put me off on my micro timing, possibly having to shuffle a unit around unexpectedly (but predictably) earlier. I'm cutting margins very close all around the empire, so a turn or two here and there of this kind of thing isn't a surprise, but it annoys me. Workshops are sprouting up here soon. They suck now but they'll be good enough in Caste, which I'll likely stay in after my golden age.

Steady as she goes.

There's that whip overflow. hammer

Free spread! And cottages too. I'll slow build the market over eons. Probably not the best use, but it's what's happening. Once I swap into OR, I'll chop those two forests and hopefully be close to finishing the market. Then I'll get started on...who knows. Another multiplier building. Or, if I don't have Education yet, and I probably won't, I'll go back for the forge or something. When it's all said and done, I'll have 9 cottages here for Canyon and stagnate at size 12 or so, occasionally borrowing the wheat to stay afloat.

I kind of wish I had skipped the axe build here initially because it took so long, but I'm sure I need it. This is a nice city.

I'm kind of obsessed over this city. I could have hurried the settler out but I'm really holding on to the chops for either Mids (surely someone is going to build them soon. Right??) or AW for my prophet/shrine, currently slated to be my fourth great person.

I couldn't sort out a better way to get a worker up here, so I'll build one here. I'll overflow into a forge or directly into Moai, depending on which method gets both buildings up fastest. I'm guessing the forge but I'll have to run the numbers later.

This little lovely is coming along nicely, now freshly whipped for a library.

Time for some happy whales! Borders pop EoT and the work boat is ready to stab some whales from the sea. Happy, right?

GNP took a hit swapping to saving gold. My soldier count is also sliding lower than it should.

T96

You'll have to check the micro plan to see what happened. No pictures, but I'm guessing they'd look an awful lot like the last 35-40 I've just posted. crazyeye Saved gold, grew a couple of cities, probably found a barbarian. Who knows. Then waited forever for the turn to reload. smile

Edit: T96 pics found from the deep recesses of gmail... Some omitted due to a cap of 50 pictures per post. eek
