On your advice, I am now building a settler. I apparently forgot to take a screenshot of the area. Suite's settler disappeared. I can found on the coast in three turns. Suite can, if he wants, get more troops there in time. I probably won't fight him if he comes in force. (Probably.)
I should take back some of the mean things I said about this game. It's not boring. (Still depressing, but not boring.) Here is my empire:
That entire northeastern portion I won by the spear. Not that it did me any good. I'm building workers because I received an unexpected offer to trade my stone for a furs. This made my Walls builds bad, but it did wonders for my happy cap. (I haven't had a new source of happiness since the capital's silver.) So I'm currently working a bunch of unimproved tiles. I hope to fix this soon.
Here's the demos screen:
I'm above average in land area. Given unlimited time, this would be useful. Unfortunately, my GNP has set a clock on me. Holland who was 6 cities to my 9 has triple my GNP. Admittedly, he is Financial with 3 luxuries and colosseums. Still, my economy is in shambles. I'm researching Construction ahead of Currency, because if I go for Currency first, I don't think I'll live long enough to get to cats.

Construction first seems like a reasonable call.

I haven't been taking many screenshots, so I'll have to use my words. Both of my scary neighbors (Ziankali and Suite) declared war on tiny opponents to their (respective) Southeasts. This was some relief to me. For a while, I had been trading my stone for somebody's furs. This somebody no longer needed my stone and I can't afford to buy the furs, so this turn I took a big happiness hit across the board. In order to keep my Construction timeline, I'm starving a bunch of unhappy cities. I'll get Construction next turn and whip the unhappy populace into catapults. If I can get enough cats, I'll feel secure for the time being. Holland, one of my neighbors to the west, has very few cities and a tech rate that blows mine out of the water. He's revolted to Vassalage (maybe Hereditary Rule, I wasn't really paying attention ). I'm not so worried about him. Even though he has cats and God knows what else, he shouldn't be able to build big enough to threaten me. Nane just offered me open borders. I accepted and am building a scout to see his lands. I'd like to know how badly I pink-dotted him. I'm still paying him Silver in tribute.
The plan currently is to batten down the hatches and try to survive as long as possible. After Construction, I'll go for Currency and then Monarchy for Hereditary rule. I've got a large amount of land, but I still have no luxuries. Besides the starting silver, the luxuries in my (above average sized) borders consist of 2 wines and a dye. Thoughts of conquest give way to thoughts of survival.

Can you get some happiness through religion and cheap temples? Maybe even worth building some collossea?

My tech rate is so bad that I haven't even touched the religious line. It should be cheap enough after Currency. Honestly, a couple coliseums won't go amiss. I might be building one (not paying too much attention) but almost everywhere is building catapults. Here's why:
Nane offered open borders. I accepted. I had planned to build a scout to spy on him, but he's already running a chariot through my lands, so next turn I'll have an archer in his lands to watch the approached to my silver city. The open borders thing is almost certainly his attempt to see who he should attack:
If he gives me ~3 turns, I'll be unconcerned. We'll see if he gives me that long.

I admit I might not be playing with the keen insight and steely determination this game requires.

Hmm.
Ivory is a good resource. It gives you +1 happy and a very strong unit. It is also on a tech that is already a high priority. I guess if I had to choose between the wine and dye in my borders and the fur and ivory in nane's borders, I suspect I'd prefer the ivory and furs.
Nane has had vision on my cities for a couple of turns. He should be slamming this stack at me right now. As is, we'll see if I have time.
