No, I think it's a good idea to tell T-hawk we'll guess LIFE as the +1.

I don't know that word. Hopefully, a reference to a media franchise that the team can fill me in on.

So let's talk about Crusader. Contra JR4, I don't think it was clued purely for the military connotations. This is a Civ site, after all. If you wanted to clue generic military words plus TURKEY, you'd go with something like Janissary. So I think we need to consider the religious and historical connotations, too. That's why I still favour BOND and BUGLE, possibly both. The other word would be BOOT, because the crusaders travelled far. DOCTOR would be another reason to clue Crusader, but I think it's too far removed; it would be better to clue Hospitaller directly.

The Shofar words should probably come first. But we should definitely guess as many words as we can. This is likely our last turn.

The problem with cluing Hospitaller is that it'd take you further away from TURKEY, BOND and the rest; I agree on BOND being a likely choice.

As for Shofar...

It's an ancient kind of musical instrument associated with Judaism; it's a little like a BUGLE in shape and lacking moving parts to alter its pitch. Traditionally they were made of horn...so RAM is probably another clue.

Some designs could be shaped like a BOOT.

Shofars were/are used for announcing things like the new year, the new moon and the beginning of a war or battle.

Interesting! So we have to play this as if we have all the pieces we need. Shofar is such a specific clue, it must have been intended as Shofar 3. BUGLE/RAM can obviously be clued with plain old Horn. So Shofar must be... BUGLE/RAM/NEW YORK? On account of the large Jewish community in New York? That's the only reason I can see for clueing a Jewish horn. And that neatly leaves BOND/BOOT as the remaining Crusader words.

That's the simplest solution, so most likely the correct one. If we start thinking that BOOT might be the third Shofar word, or FENCE a Crusader word, then we don't have enough clues to finish this round, so we just have to trust that's not the case.

That all makes sense to me...sunrise, JR4, do you agree?

@Fenn:
I`ve never heard about a shofar before so I`m happy to trust you here.

@Azoth:
Crusaders certainly fought for the pope in the medieval era so religious and historical connotations can`t be ruled out, I agree. However, I do see the military aspect as more important than, say, treating the wounded.

As BUGLE is a possible connection to both Crusader and Shofar I`m not opposed to us guessing it. We all seem to like BOND. However, if BUGLE and BOND both are correct we already have 4 Crusader words. In principle, BOOT could still be correct, more so as Fenn mentioned that a Shofar can be shaped as one.

NEW YORK could perhaps be one of the words we`re looking for but I`d rather guess that last.

To sum up, we need 5 words to get us over the line, 2 of which are Crusader words.

My preference is: BOND, BUGLE, RAM, BOOT and NEW YORK in that order.

Sorry guys that I've been largely afk late this week, work + school + holiday prep all hitting me at once. If those three are all ours I'll try to make a substantive post in the morning.
