Yeah, it seems like an extreme reaction, but...whatever.

If they have a couple of good commerce resources (Gold) they might not be too bad off, but without them they've got to be running the slider low.

Yeah. Well, we'll see I guess.

I played the turn this morning before work; suttree did in fact move his axe onto the forested hill diagonally-adjacent to the city last turn. So, it'll be interesting to see if he tries sniping warriors this turn or moves it back when he sees my shock Chariot.

Looks like he played and planted EIGHTH city this turn... yowza.

Wow! That's a LOT of hammers to spend on settlers. Even aside from the drain on the economy, that's a lot of other things he can't possibly have built. He must be gambling heavily that no one will start a war with him, because he simply can't have that much in the way of a military right now.

Well, it appears his two neighbors, retep and I, are in no position to really quarrel with him. We don't have copper and retep has expanded just as hard; in addition to that, retep, from what little land of his we can see (I'll post some screenshots tonight), is working multiple cottages instead of food-hammer tiles, presumably to support his tanking economy.

I wonder how well retep's Exp Inca pick worked out for him, as he seemingly went Pottery pretty early anyways despite the fact that he didn't need to for granaries.

Here's the situation. We gambled with our first unit, the unpromoted chariot, who won a harrowing battle:

Next, I moved our big bruiser like so, to threaten his axeman. He'll have a 10% fortify bonus next turn but I think we'll still get 85-90% odds; I have to double-check. It was 90% without the fortify bonus. He won't get odds if he attacks out, and even if he does, we have the C1 chariot to cover for him. HOPEFULLY, he gets the message and and just backs off. Probably not though; hope you got your lucky rabbit foot out Grimace.

Note that suttree's power IS climbing; I have an archer coming out of the Titanic next turn.

On our other border, Barteq continues to be a pain too. He did switch turn-order with us this turn though, so maybe he's just exploring. I stuck our chariot out, and there's no indication of reinforcements. I'm still putting out another archer before the settler.

And, finally, here's the promised screenshot of retep's territory. Note that one of his cottages is already a hamlet!

Fortunately his power superiority is pretty small right now. You're not really that far behind him. Excellent news on the Chariot attack...some useful XP and one less barb warrior. If I was suttree, I'd probably leave my axe there and hope for the best. Even if he moved NE, he has no where to go after that with equivalent defensive bonuses and you could hammer him under really easily. He might gamble that you wouldn't attack into his territory, but if I were you I wouldn't let that stop me from waxing an axeman, especially with a 2 move unit that I could move away after the kill. So it'll be interested to see what he does.

As much as it offends the builder in me, I think building a few more military units is going to be really important in determining how the next 50 turns go.

The situation changed to this:

So I decided to do this:

36 capture gold, not bad, not great - kinda thought I'd get a bit more. Thought very long and hard over whether to raze it or not, and in the end decided to keep it and name it the USS Maine in indication that I'm very willing to go to war for real over this spot. I mean, hell, its right on our back door. I really don't understand why he's expanded so much in this direction and not at all in retep's; I did find him menacing retep's northern border with an axeman, so he's certainly not out to win any friends.

Anyways, he certainly gets odds on the chariot this turn, but he'll be unable to take the city immediately this turn and he'll get zero capture gold, which is what I'm betting he was really after. If he chooses to move in with the spearman, however, he CAN take the city next turn. I will retreat our chariot if he moves in though, and start teching the hell out of HBR. So, gambling a chariot on a city and finding out what kind of northern neighbor I have either way; I think its worth it. I do have an archer heading up, eta 5 turns though.

Barteq started moving north along our borders and I see no further northern troop movements from him; I guess he really just is exploring in an assholish way. Retep is now on 8 cities.

Ooh, well-played.

Something you may want to consider...he can't possibly have a large military right now, so those two units probably represent a significant portion of his modern units. You may want to run one of those chariots into his territory (if he doesn't back off immediately) and see what kind of defenses he has...I'm betting his cities are mostly protected by warriors or axes (or maybe even nothing). Do you know if he has Archery?

Right now you have a short window where he probably doesn't have many spears...I'd bet that one right there is the only one he has right now. smile

Welp, shoulda razed it I guess.

That's an additional spear, 2 workers, and a chariot. Hope that maintenance sinks you.

So, there's not really a safe option to grab copper now. We can grab HBR in 9 turns though... should we?
