Just to make things clear, the diplomacy rules in this game don't allow you to send messages through unit renaming. Please, refrain from doing so from now on.

I don't think he renamed any units; the stack of horse archers was just a message in the metaphorical sense.
Edit: Ok, ignore the above, I see now that you were referring to something else.
Mike, I hope you get over your lull in enthusiasm. This has been a great thread to follow so far.
If you know what I mean.

Sadly, had to post this in the tech thread:
Quote:I'm really, genuinely sorry to all of the rest of you to have to post this. Unfortunately this game is taking too big of a commitment from me, and I need to ask for a replacement player to take over. It's clear that there are going to be some very difficult and time-consuming turns ahead, and I can't give them the proper attention with my current work situation. These last two weeks have been very difficult for me personally, and sadly this game is not helping matters. I've had trouble getting to sleep the last few nights because I was so stressed out by this game, and I was absolutely dreading logging into this game all day today. It's not healthy - I need to step away and let someone else take over, if they're willing.
I paused the game for the moment. I will leave some suggestions in my spoiler thread for anyone who wants to take over. Again, I'm truly sorry to all of you, I never expected this to happen when I signed up a few months ago. But I simply can't continue at this point. I hope this doesn't ruin your game.
I feel awful about asking to bow out from this one. At the same time, I'm at the point where the stress from this game is starting to damage my state of mind, and I just can't force myself to continue. I also don't think it's fair to do a crappy job of logging in for a couple of minutes each day and putting forth no effort. The best solution is to find someone who wants to play this role, if anyone is available.
Why can't I continue on as before? Because we have two ongoing wars, about to become three:
Noblehelium and Gaspar finally decided to attack. They will declare war next turn. That's going to turn this game into an orgy of blood and destruction, which I honestly cannot deal with right now. We're also still at war with Sevenspirits (who admittedly probably can't do anything) and Goreripper, who teched Guilds and will probably attack with knights. These are not going to be quiet builder turns.
We won the Liberalism prize and took Nationalism with the free tech. If I were playing, I would use the beaker overflow to finish Machinery tech (not enough time to get Gunpowder) and then revolt to Nationhood civic and draft maces. Noble and Gaspar shouldn't make it that far with horse archers against maces. Of course, their attack will mostly kill our chances of winning the game. We needed about 10-15 more turns of peace, and then we'd have been good. Sadly not to be.
Again, I can't emphasize enough how disappointed I feel about all this. I'm truly sorry. But you might have noticed how hard it's been for me to update in the last few weeks. No matter how much I want to continue, this is still only a game, and it's simply taking too much of a toll right now. I hope we can find someone interested in filling this position.
Thanks to those who read and enjoyed this thread.

Aw, that's really a shame Mike
I have really enjoyed lurking your thread, but I don't think anyone would mind if you cut back on the reporting if it saved you time you can't spare in RL. TBH tapping out before you even lose a single unit might earn you a reputation for future games as having a glass jaw. I entirely understand what a blow to your morale the current situation must be, having myself been in similar situations before, but that doesn't exactly look like an unbeatable force Gaspar / Noble are fielding there; perhaps you could find some enjoyment in punishing them? You aren't far off at all from being able to draft Musketeers, and presumably you were planning on eventually wiping them out anyway.

I know how you feel, Mike. The same thing happened to me when PBEM 46 started to go south - I was also in a bad place in my personal life, and the frustration from each fed off of and into each other. Eventually I posted a similar message, which ended that game - and I became much happier afterward, though the blow to my pride stung. You made the right choice, and it will get better.
You wrote a highly entertaining thread and played an extraordinary game. You have much to be proud of. Thank you for a game well-played.

So, as Mikehendi pointed out, there are 14 HArchers + 2 Chariots incoming from the NobleHelium/Gaspar land. Caen, the city they will attack this turn, is defended by 2 Spears
The city is as good as dead. I will dry-whip another Spear, just in case the city survives the turn by some miracle. I will however keep the 2 Spears in the city. If HArchers attack next turn, they will have to attack across the river, so with luck Spears should be able to kill 5 of them. Which is going to be very helpful
I'm also going to dry-whip Spears in all other cities close to the NobleGas border, the ones they may decide to attack next. This turn I'm finishing Machinery research, next turn is revolt to Nationhood, turn after that it's Maces time - so whips have to be this turn
NobleGas have a scouting Chariot inside our borders, so I'm going to close the borders before ending turn. Don't want to give them more information than they already have, and the Chariot may end up out of action if the bounce is good
Our own scouting units in NobleGas territory confirmed that there's currently no follow-up incoming. With luck, Caen will be the only city I lose
The plan is just to keep teching and defend to the best of my ability. Revolt to Nationhood if drafting maces is necessary - with Musketeers very much on the horizon, I would have to revolt some time soon in any case. Mikehendi, what did you plan to research after Machinery? Engineering, Guilds, and Gunpowder all seem reasonable

I'm confused- slavery and nationhood aren't in the same civic category
