Have you considered moving the SE fishing village NW on top of the rice?
Pros: - get +1 food right away (rice will only be +2 for a long time) - can chop a forest to get it started - can work a cottage for the capital - picks up a river grassland that is otherwise wasted Cons: - can't put a filler city 2S of the elephants, in case you were wanting to do that - nets the fish a little later - long-term you get 1 food less from the rice - 4 coast tiles less (in case you were thinking Moai)
My opinions, free to be ignored:
I think people (including me sometimes) undervalue first ring food. I think the south site is far stronger 1S. Where it is, it needs 30 hammers and 10 turns for a monument before it has any value at all. 1S it can be a very valuable city with the horse + sheep without needing a monument at all for a while. River hill mines are also very good tiles to work and you get one more. I'd consider this one 2W of the marked spot. Losing the whales isn't a big deal and you get another river grass to offset settling on one. Distance maintenance is slightly lower. It can also borrow the ivory to build out a work boat very fast to start the fish, to immediately be a +5 food site. I don't mind settling on dry rice in general but the problem doing that here is the fish is delayed too much. The site is fine but I'd far prioritize claiming the wet corn to the north first. The site here will take ages to grow and expanding borders here will be very hard without production or forests. Sites here are full of compromises, but you can make an argument that river grass hill gold is the best natural tile in Civ 4. So I'd really want to consider how to work it as soon as possible. The marked site is terrific once it gets going but it will take a long time to get there. I think a 1/2/8 tile does very much to speed up a civ's curve though. It's a hard problem and you might have to compromise the southern city locations to get it very early but I'd really think hard about doing that.
I agree fully with William's points about the importance of first ring food, but I still like the rice site. Working river cottages and ivory right away isn't a bad start, and you do have that forest for a "free" monument. I'm probably just too enamoured with dry jungle rice to seriously consider any alternatives, though
Going in order of WilliamLP's post:
1. I initially had that city 1S, but moved it 1N because of the Cow because I thought the food resource made it worthwhile. It seems it isn't considered to be, so 1S it is. 2. I prefer 2W to the Rice, borrowing the Ivory seems like enough reason for that. Whales are pretty useless indeed, so sad. 3. This is a late priority city, so yeah. It will be decent when we get to it, though. 4. The Clams probably get up quickest due to all the Jungle and the ability to chop out the WB and all that, this is the best site I think. Regardless of where we put it, we can't settle it within our next 2 cities: It is too far away and would be too easily destroyed. Building to it with the Horse City and Desert Sheep/Cow helps provide for it. But sadly, we can't get to it soon at all.
And suddenly bandwidth has raped this thread. Uuuuuuh...
I'll have to fix that, since I imagine that waiting for the bandwidth to reset would be unpleasant. Which means re-upping aaaall those images...NEVER exceeded bandwidth before in all my years using Photobucket, heh.
