Mmmm, war started. Not the best results, but not the worst, either.

First off, he had a chariot that was able to snipe my axeman on the forested hill. Deleted the worker, unfortunately. Next, I attacked At Trump; was up against 2 axes and 2 spears. First horcher, flawless defeat. Second and third, also defeated but did some damage. Next, my chariot had a flawless victory against the axe, but the next one died at 99.1% odds. Finally, I cleaned up.

Next turn I'm hitting Shanghai (garrison is 1 axe, 1 spear, 1 chariot) with 4 horchers and an archer. I'll have to see how I do there before I advance further. suttree also has a galley out in the channel; I'm covering the work-boated crab with my own galley. If he tries to advance, I'll try to hit him at-odds with the new Naval Initiative mechanic.

retep finally canceled OB with suttree. Didn't declare war himself though. He's up to 12 cities now! Doing very very well this game.

Nice. It's always frustrating when you have such great odds and you lose. A loss at ~80% odds? Unfortunate, but that still a 1 in 5 chance of losing. Losing at 99+% odds sucks ass. though.

Woops, I forgot to update after I played yesterday. I took another city off suttree last turn; he tried to attack out to capture a worker, succeeding in killing one HA with a spearman but failing against the other with the axe/chariot. I cleaned up the spear with an archer (no use risking a HA) and took the city. I offered him peace, which I think was a mistake. Well, we'll see.

Yeah, that seems awfully early to offer peace. If I were him I'd think that might mean you were unable to keep going, which might inspire me to keep the war going and try to push back. If I thought I could get units quickly enough, anyway.

Hey GJ, anything new going on? It's been weeks since an update. smile

I haven't been very motivated to update, what with Parkin AWOL and you being pretty tuned out...

I guess I can update tonight. I'm at work right now, so now SS on hand. The situation is pretty mediocre. suttree did accept peace, leaving the improvements alone, but then beat us to the marble site by a turn. We then beat him to the island site right below the warzone, with the 2nd-ring fish and dry wheat. I think I could have pressed forward to raze his next city at some considerable loss but couldn't have done more than that, so I think peace was the right decision. Unfortunately, he now has iron working and is building up a stack of swordsmen; I think he's going to try to take the island site from me, as he's had a scout sitting on the island outside its borders for some turns now, and has a pair of galleys waiting nearby. The city has an axe+archer defense right now and is planted on a hill, so I think it should be OK with just an extra archer once its borders pop.

Our economy was in dire straights for awhile, as retep canceled open borders with us right when we were trying to save gold for Currency. We were down to saving like 15-16 gold per turn for quite a few turns. Fortunately, our economy has recovered very nicely; we finally met an intercontinental trade partner, Gawdawk, just finished Currency, and have an Academy in our pathetic capital. Unfortunately, retep and Barteq's economies are still better, and everyone else's CYs are a lot higher than ours. We just planted our 12th city this turn, but, unfortunately, half of our cities are size 2 or lower. Retep is at 13 cities with about +50% CY compared to us, Barteq at 13 at about +25% (he just planted like 4 or 5 in the last half-dozen turns then built the HG), suttree at 13 with about +30%. We're catching up, just slowly. Almost none of our seafood being first-ring is another issue, Cre woulda been great on this map. Happy cap is another problem; we have a lot of whip anger still wearing off from our war with suttree, and our happy caps weren't all that amazing before that. The next tech I'd like is Metal Casting, for forges. Finally something we can build with a bonus multiplier! Calendar is a possibility after (we have silks (4 of them) and spices) that but I think that we'll be forced to get Construction instead dude to suttree and barteq's power buildups. The medium-term goal is to get to Compass, for wharves and harbors. We never got a GG out of the war with suttree, unfortunately, so 5 XP Nav 1 ships will have to wait awhile...

I dunno. Our long-term prospects don't look great to me. Our land sucks and we don't have much of it. If this was base BTS and we could build the base-BTS colossus and have the base-BTS GLH, I'd feel a lot more optimistic.

I'm not tuned out -- I'm always willing to offer advice and answer questions...but my experience level, especially in MP, is WAY below most others here.

Yeah, it sounds like you're not in a great position right now -- are there any other weaker neighbors you can beat up on? smile

It does sound like you're going to have a war with suttree whether you want it or not, so I'd move forward with that in mind. If you've got swords coming your way, I'd try and get some more axes out. You could also try to intercept/sink his galleys. You probably couldn't stop him from moving one batch of troops to the island, but you might be able to stop future ones. Can you post a map of your territory and the conflict zone?

Are you cottaging everything in sight?

Alright, here's the update. Mix of pictures from the last 2 turns. An overview of our crummy empire:

The diplomatic situation is this:

After I sent him back a trade of The Blackjack for his marble city, reminding him how he beat me to that marble by 1 turn, he sent this:

I just don't fucking get it, what is the point of this. Is he saying that he'll give me marble if I let him take the city? What? He's got 3 galleys worth of swords, I think, and whipped 6 times last turn, so I assume when I log into today we'll be at war. He's still been holding to the permanent turn-split; last time I ever play with this guy. There's a high possibility that his desire for The Blackjack is a feint, and that he'll sail past it to either my capital or my copper. I really don't get why he cares about this little city so much, he's got a fucking enormous island that could fit 8 cities just to the south of his center that neither Barteq retep have any easy way to access. (the land situation on this map is SO imbalanaced; suttree and Barteq have tons of land available, while retep and I are relatively screwed. It also appears that 5 of us are on one continent (as I don't get ICTR with Azza), while 3 are on another? what's with that? why not half and half?). Anyways, the Blackjack will have 3 axes and an archer defending it, once I whip it this turn; no border pop though. Not sure if that's enough to hold or not. I guess I'll have to whip out axes all over the goddamn place, as he has millions of spears too; wanted to save these whips for forges, but what can you do.

It's an 11 player game IIRC? So you'd have to have uneven numbers somewhere once you go into multiple continents.

This one is only 8 players, actually. PB20 is the one with 11.
