[SPOILERS] Rusten enters uncharted waters

So he’s in a Taj golden age and you are still winning the demos?  You aren’t even #1 in population, although I guess that’s not always a good reflection of the number of citizens...

As someone who lost countless games of chess to you, I know how this feels to your opponents alright.

Nah, he's no longer in a golden age. But I do have a higher output than his GA a few turns ago.

Population is inflated by high city sizes. OH (and other civs) are working a lot of coast and reaching 18+ cities. Mine are mainly 10-15 even when matured and not working any coast. I have caught up in population count in the victory screen which is based on # of citizens.

I'd play an advanced start pitboss, but not any time soon. 1 game is my limit and this will last a while. Might be a little burned out after too and in need of a small break.

yeah for a while working coast is best with fin but there is point when land beats coast even the coast guys is fin. For sure this game will get all the energy from you. having 70+ is a nighmare.

DS surprisingly didn't attempt to reinforce. Maybe he thought I'd keep the cities and he could recapture them? noidea
My decision was pretty easy. Traded 3 knights for 3 cities. Lost one and deleted the other two. The southern one can escape scot-free by galley next turn.

Steel will be completed T179  upon which I will upgrade all my trebs and head into his core and keep everything that's captured. I'll have most if not all of my units transported across the sea by then too.

No Civ IV experience whatsoever here, what's the benefit of deleting military units?

XP denial or maintenance costs are the only two reasons I can think of.

Not losing them through battle means I don't get any war weariness and I deny DS the combat experience. They were so low health that they had no chance to win a fight. It also denies him the cathartic boost of killing my units. Need to keep him disinterested and resigned.

That second part is mainly spoken in jest. The main reason is the combat experience, although the psychological implications can be underestimated.

It's amazing you guys get anything done.

I've only played two turns and there's not much to report. Only some slightly interesting tactics. DS will rue not having settled a city in this region and chopping the forests. This also shows why it was a good idea to pillage the roaded forest 1W of the horse earlier.

I've got 2 workers that will complete a road on the second silk next turn, upon which my knights can get in range of multiple cities with just one turn of movement (includes Porto Novo). And being on defensive terrain it's hard for him to do anything about it. My eyes are mainly set on Lagos which is located just outside of view of the image to the north. It's guarded by a single longbow right now. Also worth noting that Catfish expands its borders end of turn.

DS currently has all his knights in Porto Novo, so if he doesn't pay attention he will not even be in striking range of the selected hill. Either way this tactical opportunity will be a headache for him the next turns.

Considering launching a GA to get to corporation sooner (Wall Street and +1 trade routes). Will sleep on it. Gut feeling is that it's not worth it. Doesn't save many turns and I will have much more population some turns into the future. Later on I can also sync the golden age with free speech and universal suffrage.

I wouldn't say the war is at a stalemate just yet, but I'm not that upset about it slowing down. I mainly started this war to tank DS' game and secure the land for myself long term. That's why I'm completely fine with razing cities. So far it's gone okay. I'm also hoping that Commodore will join in to help things, but there's no guarantee on that. If I get impatient there's drafting -- his knights struggle against rifles, even with siege.

What's your expected payback timeline for razed cities vs captures? I'm assuming you're planning on replacing once combat is completed.
