[Spoiler] Desperados: The Black Sword & Agent

Is that kosher to double move that way? He didnt have a unit next to the city last turn and would need 2 turns to cross that forest

Maybe it makes sense, I don't know tech rate, how badly happiness is needed, etc. But if Monarchy isn't in the near term planning and/or takes more than five turns to research if it is in the plan, the fort still gets the resource connected sooner. Despite my predilection for giving away plains wines like skittles to everyone whether they want it or not, it isn't a great tile so the yield isn't all that important. If the fort gets the happiness in play sooner I think it's a good move, if the happiness is needed.

My $0.02 .

Well, it's not urgently needed, but I thought that setting it up now while I have some peace with HRE would be better than parking a worker in prime "snipe me!" position later on. Assuming I haven't made a more permanent solution to the Vienna problem by then.

No, he wouldn't be allowed to double-move to take the city.

Looking at civ stats he didn't though;

We played last T115.
Then we played first T116 attacking the city.
Then he played last T116 to take it.

Are you sure he didn't have units there, maybe 1SE where we can't see?

Cross-post: I think leaving 1 worker isolated like that to make the improvement is fine. I don't think people will declare war over one worker at this stage of the game and if they do, then it will have been worth the worker to know their intentions. Which btw, we have the option of doing the exact same thing to HRE now, they have an axe guarding a worker who's building a fort. We could chariot him if we wanted. And of course we already have a safer source of wine to connect anyway.

Ah, you're right, 1SE is flatland so no visibility.

Sorry Whosit! Don't mean to impugn your honor.

I'm glad this event passed by without too much trouble, because reloads (even though Grimace is quickly on top of reloads for this game since he's playing in it). I know it was inadvertent but be more careful in the future about playing double turns when you roll the turn. You may not have known you were in a race for that city at EoT115 and SoT116 so I'm not condemning the double move attacking there. But if you had got the city by merit of the double move it probably would have necessitated a reload and some kind of turn order being hammered out among whoever was nearby. I'm glad it didn't come to that, but it was a possibility because of the situation.

Moral of the story -- maybe don't play both turns when you roll a turn when you're in a situation that could be a race. There aren't a ton of them so it won't always come up, but when you're about to capture a city, settle a city, pop a hut, those kinds of things, it doesn't hurt to be cautious to help avoid forcing your pitboss overlord/management types to reload games.

Back in lurker mode, that rationale about the worker/fort is entirely sensible. Why dangle a pork chop in front of a hungry wolf if it can be avoided? On the other hand, my lurker mode AI informs me that baiting your opponent to attack is more likely to lead to bloodshed, so in that event I disagree with building the fort now and insist you should send the worker back (unguarded) to the border at some point in the future so it can be sniped, leading to a long and bloody conflict. hammer

I moved the worker away anyway, because I am concerned about imminent CH hostility:

If he wants to attack I won't be able to hold that city. I'll wait until it looks like it's actually going to survive before renaming it.
But.. I don't think he could see that I only had an Impi garrisoning it. So maybe he'll assume the worst and back off.

Lubeck seals off the Southeast front.

The good news though, is that Badman's River got a culture pop and we now directly border that Roman city:

It also landed Buddhism randomly which is rad.

Whosit offered a world map trade, I deferred... it'd be nice to see what Elum is up to over there, but I don't feel comfortable revealing map information with an immediate neighbor.

You queued up marketplaces in a bunch of my cities. Shouldn't we be investing in lots of swords to cut HRE down to size?

Yup:

I took the Impi out by boat, no use throwing him away with the rest of the city.

No activity by HRE forces anywhere else that I can see so hopefully he just wants to raze this site then will settle for peace.

I wasn't sure what the overall goal was, so market places seemed the safest choice, sorry.

I think if you do want to attack though, then it's best to go all in on it. Turn everything over to military, either start whipping now, or throw a golden age with the scientist coming and start whipping afterwards.

Honestly, I'm not sure that path is a good choice in terms of the overall game. We're quite evenly matched, it will be a tough fight with the most likely outcome being dragging both of us down. On the other hand, it seems CH is determined to be hostile anyway. But the most important thing is to commit to a gameplan - peace and defend or all in attack.

Oh, and does he still have the axe and worker by Sabata? Can we hit them with the chariot?

No, those units moved away first turn of the war.

HRE isn't negotiating any peace even after razing the city, so we're stuck in this turn split. I haven't seen seen any big buildup on any borders yet, but again, no visibility on the north.
My weakest spot is Cera Una Volta to the north, because I had to split off forces there to settle the overseas colony. I hope he doesn't have visibility on the city.
Everything is producing military now.

The Great Scientist emerged. Is it worth it to pop a golden age when just slow building military units?
The Academy would add 10% to current empire science production, guess that's not worth it.
