NICE! Full of character. Looks like the garage hasnt been used much too, nice place for a workshop? Fireplace, sun deck, green house and lots of greenery... what more can one ask for.

Lil Gris is growing in an alarming rate into a beautiful young lady

There are a bunch of raspberries in the back in that second picture, though I'm not sure if they're visible from the shot. There are also a few blueberry bushes (not enough for a pie, but enough for some in your cereal in the morning). There's also a few plants growing that look suspiciously like tomatoes, although I haven't looked too closely.

There's actually quite a bit of room to tuck some vegetables behind some flowers. There were potted plants throughout, and their removal has left some space (I do want to check and make sure there's not stuff buried there that comes up at a different time). Also, the raspberries are starting to take over, and they can be knocked back a bit. With the berries and tomatoes, all I'd really want to have for myself would be some peppers (which could do very well in pots on the brick) and some peas (which could probably occupy a spot where the "extra" raspberries are). I might put in some potted herbs on the brick, too. So, that would be easy enough without disturbing too much. July is probably too late for most of that, so my focus for this year will be to avoid killing what's already here.

The garage door doesn't even open, so it's supposed to be a workshop type space. That will take some time, though, because it's family members who are moving out of here, and they have quite a bit of stuff still in the garage.

The deck is nice. There's a very, very ancient tree off to the side (with lots of birds living in it too), and the deck has a perfect view of it. There's a chaise up there, and it looks like a great spot for reading. The aphids are swallowing the rose, though, and I need some flower baskets up there. I've always just pulled aphids off by hand, but that clearly won't work when I can't reach most of the rose. So, I'll need to figure something else out. The green house is nice but doesn't get a lot of light. Apparently it's great for orchids, though!

Gris-

Best thing for aphids is to introduce ladybugs into the garden. If your daughter is anything like mine, she will also get a kick out the experience.

There are incecticides that work, but I generally try to avoid them. If your rose has no problem with black spot, then hosing the aphids off the rose is another solution. Aphids are poor climbers, and tend to become lunch when knocked to the ground.

Thanks for the photos--looks like you have plenty to enjoy in the new home!

Gris,

Very pretty.. Nice to see a piccie or 2 of Grislette too. I can see why you'd not want to run wire all over the inside B)

I like the greenery. Nice for privacy too, I'd imagine.

For wireless - you may need more than one access point to cover a house that big. It sorta depends on the thickness and construction type of the walls. And if you want to surf with a Notebook in odd places..

Anyways - congrats on getting a new house - that looks very nice. :D

Quote:To Gris: Don't worry, secutiry won't lead to more tedium. Once all computers in your house are configured to use (for example) WEP, it's completely transparent to you.

Unfortuneately, WEP is not that secure. There is a problem with the way it randomly assigns the encryption key. WEP says that it has a huge number of possible keys to use, but the problem is, the algorithim in WEP tends to be very point oriented when it chooses keys. (Say you have the ability to have 10000 keys, well WEP tends to say, I'll use 500-510 and hand those out to people on the wireless network never choosing something outside the other range. With time, someone can figure out what keys your WEP is handing out and can still tap into the wireless, saavy wireless people can do this in a matter of minutes.)

Actually Pete, if you are willing to use Windows 2000 Server (not sure if you are using Linux, Win2k, or NT 4 for the router, you might be able to do this under Linux to, but I'm not familiar with Linux) and stick more NICs into your router machine, you could go with Earthlink and set one NIC to the IP that Earthlink wants and then setup a NIC for the Office Network and a NIC for the non-Office machines.

Hi,

OS doesn't really matter much. I have plenty of old machines, plenty powerful enough to act as a bridge. Even Win98 will let me set up two NICs, so I can easily break the system out into as many sub nets as I desire. That isn't the problem.

The problem is that many games use the IP address to identify the player's machine. Not the port, just the address. Address conversion schemes use the port to identify which local machine the packets are meant for. Thus, the information needed by the router to determine which local machine is the target for an incoming packet is not available.

After some playing around, I've come to the conclusion that I just have to pick my compromise. There really isn't a solution that does it all that is available to me. A block of 4 contiguous IP address so that I could use a local sub net would be nice, but is not available.

Ultimately, the problem is the lack of IP6, but that's another story.

lol I've long given up hope that IP6 will really come. It's superior to IP4, sure, and lots of computers with working IP6 stacks exist, but as long as the net infrastructure works only with IP4 and there won't be a real demand for IP6, it won't happen. When I remember all the funny articles years ago that predicted the IP4 namespace would be exhausted soon and we have to move to IP6 because of that...

Maybe the upcoming switch to IP6 by the military will be enough of a push to change something...
