Yes, from time to time the starting position generator is going to throw out some starts that look better than average. Obviously that Viking capital was pretty sweet, but I wouldn't exactly say that Atlas' start was too bad either, with three floodplains and a gold resource, not to mention cows and clams both one tile outside the capital's fat cross. Things aren't perfect, but short of hard-coding perfectly equal starts, I don't think you're going to do much better than Civ4. (Who else remembers how bad Civ3 and earlier Civ games were in this regard, with NO kind of start point equalizer?)
Congratulations on another MP win; Always War Free-for-Alls aren't my cup of tea, but it looks like you did well there.

I wish I had taken a better pic of my capital, but Djenne is my second city. You have to look at the bottom of the screenie to see Timbuktu, the capital. I had to settle towards that awesome capital to get that gold and those floodplains. In fact if I had drawn any other Civ, it would have been a very close run game. But Mali's resourceless Skirmishers were a big advantage (and a needed edge versus that capital).
Occasionally I do see starts like that Viking start but normally on Civ4Fans maps . Just kidding. To me the most surprising thing about the start was the lack of jungle and the 2 marbles. Dyes and Gems often come in groups, but marble and stone very rarely.
Free For Alls are not my favorite either, I MUCH prefer team games, but they are much harder to get together. Some people are too lazy to pick out teams in pick-up games (sometimes it goes on for 20 mins. ), so they just "shuffle" the teams which=not fair=not fun.

Shuffle teams sounds like a really fun game idea actually! (sarcasm). Congrats on the CTON win Atlas. Looked like there were a couple good players in there to provide some competition. But man, Mali in a CTON. That is great luck in itself! Probably only Spain and Zulu are better!

Okay here is the story, this guy was talking some sh!t in this MP game. I said that there was no reason to be rude and call people names. Then he started calling me a n00b, so I said well when this game finishes lets play a 1 v 1 (I don't normally rise to that kind of bait and there is alot of in MP, but I indulged this time). And that was the start I got- probably what I deserved after letting someone irk me like that.

What did I do? Well I asked the guy if he liked his start, he said "not really" So I conceded. I figured if he had the same start as I did then he would have said something else (either very sarcastic or asked for a reroll).
However I was not going to leave that game without him looking at my start, so I fortified my settler, and then went and found him and spent about 10 turns trying to convince him that it was not a trick and he should follow me back to my capital. I give up, but not before he saw my start.

Wow - what a commerce rich start. Improve those beavers, mine that gold and work those two water tiles and you have lots of commerce - space here we come. Now, if I can only find people who don't need any food.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Mirror map
The Mirror map script has always thrown out some strange starting positions. I've seen it hand out starts in the tundra for absolutely no reason many, many times. I'm not sure WHY that is, mind you, but I am definitely not surprised. Maybe Sirian could tell you more... (Mirror is one of the oldest map scripts, mostly done by Firaxis intern Andy Szybalski, if I remember correctly.)
