So there is someone else who has been at this for ages.
I know I have been at that long, if not longer. Exactly when did civ 1 appear?

Civ1 came out in 1991...I remember the days of Civ2 better, as a I didn't have Civ1.

I remember Civ 1, even though I was born the year before it came out
My next-door neighbour and I used to play it all the time -- we used to found out cities right beside each other >>

First off I just have to say how excited I am for the release of Civ IV this November, and I hope my family members don't get offended when I tell them I ain't doing that whole "Christmas" thing this year due to other, er.... commitments.
Also, I have finally decided to take the plunge and sign up, after months of lurking fearing signing up for the obvious addiction that would ensue (reading reports of others and living vicariously through their games is far less time-intensive than playing) I have realized that come November all bets are off and the real-world will just have to wait (my wife was just so thrilled when I called her up, an excited young lad informing her that our lives were about to change!)
So in summary, I'd just like to thank all those hard working people who have made this sanctuary of Civ possible, not to mention the wealth of knowledge I have gained from this site and other members personal sites, and I look forward to milking every last drop of gaming fun out of Civ 3 this summer before the big day.
Here's to the future memories!

What, you really mean civ can be addictive? *cough*

But also far less fun...

Epic 49...it has a nice ring for a first epic me thinks.

Hi,
UWS Wrote:Look at me, addicted to a game that I don't even have yet I've avoided being excited about games before their release after the hype for Diablo II:LoD, so my advice would be to be careful here too. Civ 3 was, despite all its flaws, a great game and will be hard to top. As much as I want Civ 4 to be a the same time-sink Civ 3 has been, looking at the screenshots from the game at Firaxis.com and taking a quick look at the (lo-res) video leaves me cautious. Looks nice with lots of eye-candy, sure, but it also looks a bit confusing, and I miss vital information. Unit HPs are now represented by the number of small, animated men? Cute, but not so quick to grasp as the HP bar in Civ 3. And how do stacked units look like? And why can't you see how many turns are left before a building will finish, or before a city grows? This might be okay if no micromanagement is necessary or possible, but somehow I doubt that given the game concept/mechanics of Civilization. And the most important things like game balance and AI strength cannot be evaluated before the game is out anyway.
Sorry for playing Cassandra here , but I'll wait for the game to be finished before I get excited. I will buy it as I trust Firaxis after two great games though (Civ 3 and Pirates!), even if I really don't like the way they treat non-US customers.

Maybe the switch in publisher, from Atari to 2K Games, will improve treatment of non-USA customers.
Don't quote me on that! Just a thought.
