I would say from looking at the image, that the northern settler has the settler bonus, while the southern settler doesn't.

The 1S site looks pretty good for the northern settler.

The southern site will need some extra tiles revealed before I can consider what would be a good site...

For a very weird idea... It might be worth going fully nomadic and finding ideal city sites for both cities. The reason being that we are *probably* going to be seeing a very early stasis from the Illians. Spending the first 20t without settling is such an oddball idea though, that I'm not going to seriously consider it. Especially if the Illians disagree with my assessment for when to pop stasis.

Obviously an early priority is to scout those barb cities, and see if we've been left any unpleasant surprises. I wouldn't be too shocked if there were longbowmen(or better) with the held promotion in those cities.

The land we can see is decent. I'm worried that we don't have all that much production potential, especially if we move south away from those hills.. but it should be a good enough commerce base.

The lack of production shouldn't matter too much if you have a lot of commerce, since you can just rely on upgrading cheap warriors.

Good catch with the extra vision = northern settler has the bonus. Not sure why I didn't realize that. I think even more tiles are revealed though than there should be, my guess would be so that you know it's going to be important to settle something on the coast.

Playing nomad is a neat idea, but almost suicidally dangerous. Besides the obvious risk of falling way behind, all it would take is a few unfortunate encounters with griffons / giants / spiders / etc. and you'd have to settle in place or risk elimination in the wilds.

First turn completed!

Both settlers had the starting settler bonus, which I was quite happy about. In retrospect, I'd say that was giving me just enough rope to hang myself.

The northern settler found nothing of particular interest, so I settled him 1s as we've discussed.
Our capital, currently known as Galveholm will be a nice little commerce site.

4 floodplains, a sheep, a cotton and lots of riverside will leave it swimming in commerce. Absolutely great site for a financial civ.
We decided to go coastal, because the fact that we can see off coast land might just be significant.
I've gone for a worker first, and agriculture as our first tech. Growing is good. Maybe it'll even be ready before stasis.

The two warriors got a good view of the barb cities. No unexpected surprises. I also spotted the borders of a third barb city in the south. Looks like we won't be short of targets for early conquest.

For those interested in something else, here is the demographics screen. If one of my dedicated lurkers wants to take on the role of chief on intelligence, go for it. Otherwise I'll be keeping the Demo analysis rudimentary.

Everything is going well isn't it?

Well. Um.

Not really. cry

The southern settlers explorations have left him sitting unprotected right next to a goblin fort, which has 3 archers. My entire starting game is hanging by a thread.

If archers will attack out of a goblin fort, then I've stupidly lost my second settler. If they don't, we're fine. What is the answer? I'll get back to you...

When we last left we were on the horns of a dilemma. Do goblin archers leave their base to take out undefended settlers? Well the answer is...

No! jive

So I scarpered and founded Grottiburg. It's a pretty nice city spot. I definitely can't see anywhere better that won't end up cramping one of the numerous barb cities. Incense, Corn, Cotton and an Oasis as well as a few plains hills and some river grassland... Should be a good hybrid city.

So far I've seen barb cities all over the place... 4 and counting. Last turn I showed you the ones over on the western side, which had warrior guards.

This turn I got a screenshot of the southern two.

Huralden is interesting. I moved the warrior away before taking the screenshot, but it has 2 held frostling archers inside. A much tougher nut to crack.
The warriors in the two cities from last turn also have the held promotion, so we've got a few dedicated garrison troops set up. I'm hoping we take the western cities before they spawn too much though. We've got enough warriors to do the job even now, but will need to wait for them to grow first.

A screenshot of the immediate area with resource view on. Despite that a few of the southernresources don't appear. I think that means that we're close to the extreme south of the map...

Lastly we have another demographic screenshot.
I think Sciz has grabbed a hut tech, because his score is already 52. Everyone but Ichabod has settled both cities.

Also: I think we need a theme. I'm going to give it some thought, but if anyone else has some suggestions then go for it.

umm... fire would be a pretty good theme...

Or writing the original city names backwards... wink

As if Grottiburg weren't gross sounding enough.... Grubittorg. Ok actually that's about the same level of unwieldy.

Glad those archers didn't attack and we got a pretty good city out of it. The game could've been a lot harder all of a sudden.

If there are custom (held) barbs in these cities, I wonder if there's a sort of order we're supposed to capture them. You know, increasing level of difficulty as we progress.

Does the held promotion stay on units converted by for the horde? Might have to go test that... the clan could convert a pretty scary army straight away. Hopefully they'd rather not wreck their economy. (Edit: eh, forgot For the Horde was orc units anyway. Hopefully no barb cities are defended by ogres)

Why exactly do you think he didn't settle?
