My goal is for you players to have fun, and starting on equal footing is part of that. I will make a similar post in each thread. I will take the heat if folks get mad.

Ichabod, your start includes dry wheat.

Don't worry on my account. I certainly won't mind having more info, since my position was bad. I just didn't want to delay the game more. The controversy is already solved, as fas as I'm concerned.

Regarding the start, my dry wheat is on the northern part of the map, I think. South is irrigated, east has hills and forests... Well, my fogreading can't spot a non-irrigated open plains tile, so I wonder where this wheat is hiding.

That probably changes my scouting move. I think I go south and take a peek at what's there. Maybe there's something better than dry rice and I can move.

Nothing like a bit of Civ drama! lol

C'mon people, just pick Sury, Julius, Asoka and Louis and let me have my shitty last pick. I doubt there is something in the fog that'll make you pick Gengis Khan.

Seven can never catch a break - nobody wants to play with him, and his setups never go smoothly. lol

I've only read the tech thread so far, so congratulations Ichabod, you have a new dedlurker.

Maybe a late-blooming, vertical approach is your best bet for sneaking in a win? Let the big dogs tear each other apart while you build in peace? I fear the best leaders for that strategy will be taken though.

Hey, Novice. Glad to have you as a dedlurker. If I understand you correctly, you mean an approach were we try to settle only reasonable land, not try to really steal it from other players. On the other hand, we can use this to really stuff our cities of infrastructure and grow them very high. It's certainly a possibility, since I think I have the highest chance in the game to be left alone.

What traits do you think go well with this approach? Industrious, Organized, Charismatic? Maybe Napoleon, maybe Louis? Last pick can give me an advantage regarding the Industrious trait, I guess, since I can see if others are going to pick it. Maybe everyone will let it pass.

Regarding the start, I guess we'll have another food resource, if I understood Seven's script correctly. Whatever it is, I think I need to start with either agriculture or, less desirably, hunting. Can't have the chance of being two techs away of easy improvable food (if my other food resource is also a AH one).

I like the start, early pottery is possible! smile

Yeah, pretty much what I had in mind. Asoka would be good for that strategy, but you're right that being the only IND leader could be good too.

Regarding your start, maybe move SE-NE with your scout? If your food at the capital is unsatisfactory you can then move the settler W-SW and settle 1E of the sheep on T1. That saves you a forest too. Or settle in place on T0 if your scout reveals a wet grain or something.

I was thinking of moving the scout 1N, 1NE. Reasons being the following: We are guaranteed 2 food resources. By moving how I pointed out, we'll reveal the only plains tile that we can't see. That tile has the potential worst food resource that we can get, plains cow. If there's nothing up there, we either have a grassland resource to our east (which can be irrigated) or a deer on the forest.

Of course, that's considering Seven's script doesn't count Calendar resources as food resources. That could really come out to bite my logic above.

Well, if we settle near the sheep or not, at least we can be sure we have a pretty good second city spot, with improvable food of the same type.

That works too. Finding a food resource N-NW of your settler would be nice.

Regarding picks, I think we can't afford to take a Civ that doesn't start with either Agriculture or Hunting. Having to tech 2 techs for a food resource is too heavy and I don't think we can simply trust there'll be another resource in the fog.

So, these are possible:
  • Alexander (Agg, Phi)of China (Agriculture, Mining)
  • Augustus (Imp, Ind) of Babylon (Agriculture, The Wheel)
  • Lincoln (Phi, Cha) of Aztecs (Mysticism, Hunting)
  • Louis XIV (Cre, Ind)of Persia (Agriculture, Hunting)
  • Genghis Khan (Agg, Imp) of France (Agriculture, The Wheel)

And these aren't:
  • Napoleon (Cha, Org)of Rome (Fishing, Mining)
  • Charles de Gaulle (Ind, Cha)of England (Fishing, Mining)
  • Justinian (Spi, Imp)of Spain (Fishing, Mysticism)

Of course, I'd greatly favor an agriculture start, but I think we can manage only a hunting one too. Problem is, combining this with likely opponent picks, we might end up with only bad leaders to choose from...

Edit: There goes Asoka...

Edit2: And Sury... No more EXP to be chosen... I wonder what the cut combinations were, since I remember Sury being considered a top leader for most of the player base here. I'm guessing Germany made it go through (and a lot of financial leaders being cut out).

Edit3: Julius is gone and my predictions are being fulfilled. Seven probably gets Zara next... Maybe he'll be sorry for me and get Justinian or Augustus instead . Thoth is a wild card, I really don't know his style of playing Vanilla BTS.

Edit4: Taking no pity on the noob, Seven took Zara of the Celts. I guess he'll be pretty happy with this pick, since I believe he values both these traits high in comparision to what's avaiable (he'd definetely get Sury first, though).

You really should have expanded the list when you added a sixth player... Huge difference between choosing 1 from 12 and 1 from 7.
