It's, like, what, 4 or 5 base food and 7 or 8 with a farm?

As I found our inadvertantly while playing with the world builder one day, flood plains don't have to be desert. If you make a grassland floodplain you've got 5 food already, then put some kind of food resource on it and you just blow away the competition. I wonder why we never see this generated maps, though it's probably just too good.

Don't barbarians attack Missionaries ?

In Adventure 4 I walked past barbarians with undefended missionaries for centuries after I discovered they weren't attacked.
See the screenshot; the top is 2 turns before the bottom one. In the whole game I must have walked around 10 missionaries passed barbs and they all were left alone.

The one set of barbarians are guarding the hut, and will not move from it in my experience. Not sure about the other, but I have lost missionaries to Barbs.

Just recently I used my free Christian missionary to delay a barb while my city completed a defender; the only other defender was badly wounded. lol
Interesting combat animation.

Er, I have been attacked by a barb on a hut, but there may have been more barbs on that hut, so it doesn't prove anything.
