I've started playing Extreme myself yesterday and I have to say it's quite overwhelming. It feels literally extremely difficult, in the first game I lost too. Now playing my second and doing much better, but the difficulty stays high even now when I have near maxed heroes I have to be careful about my moves.
About that battle with hydras, not that it mattered much with 3 of them, but their 13 resist makes them immune to confusion, confusion has a -3 penalty.
I've been having a lot of trouble on Extreme lately as well. The last five games I've played, I've lost. Usually to a strong stack in the first war...the stack just shows up in my lands with mid-tier units and there's nothing I can counter it with. I don't remember it being this hard, I wonder if I've lost my mojo. I even took life books...and I almost NEVER take life books because I think they make the game too easy (Lionheart, etc.) I still lost. I'm on my sixth game now and I took High Men...again, the best race. It's not over yet and I still might lose.
I was looking at those Hydra too...13 resistance no way. The heroes could have just run away until the 50 turn limit instead of fleeing. Halfling slingers still look pretty good. I don't think they were adjusted at all. Death Spell really does a number on them, though. And casting it 3 times in a single battle is just ridiculous. The CPs get crazy high spell skill...it kind of takes the fun out of the game when they can cast Flame Strike over and over again. Even better, as the turns limit is 25 in the mod. Very Rare creature generally have a higher than default resistance, after you spend numerous turns and mana on one, you don't want it to die to a 20 mana common spell. Default AI was too dumb with power distribution and usually didn't spend much on increasing skill, even when having no use for more mana crystals and being far ahead in research. Slingers, as far as I remember, gained +1 to their missile attack instead of the +2 other ranged units got and that's all the specific change done to them. Death Spell is actually cheaper than Flame Strike, only 50 mana, the original cost. Edit : I've recorded my last game and will upload it (no entertaining comments though, I don't even have a webcam, it's only the game itself.) but no idea where? Youtube didn't let me do over 30 minutes last time I tried, I got a "no, you need to tell us <insert a bunch of real life data here> first" so I gave up on their site. It was way too useless recently anyway, I cant even comment without linking to a G+ account and there is no way I'm gonna do that. It was extreme with Chaos Draconians and I actually managed to win.
Try liveleak.com or vimeo.com instead.
Really? The computer players don't gain huge casting skill? I always noticed that by the middle of the game they're casting huge spells in combat, and by the end they're doing it multiple times. I mean, several full strength Psionic Blasts can really ruin your whole day. I've even tweaked my games to cut the CP from 150 back down to 10 casting skill so it won't be so fearsome, but will still grow back soon. I guess that's a bit subjective, I consider 100 to be low at the time very rare spells are available especially for high difficulty AI. As a player I usually have over 100 myself by the time I have very rares. The default AI was forced to spend 10% on skill at all times, 40% on nonskill and the remaining 50% was available for actual distribution, but if skill was 100 or higher, skill choices got replaced with something else for the majority of them. Considering how hard it is to raise skill, 10% does not do much, unless the difficulty comes with a huge income bonus and the AI already controls half the world. vimeo hmm weekly quota of 500mb lol, this game is 6.7 GBs. Liveleak looks more promising, started the upload, let's see how it goes.
Liveleak is a 2 gig limit per video. I think you need to re-encode or something, video games don't need super-high resolution.

It's a 640*480 game so that's what the video is, too. The files are less than 2gb each, I'm lucky, I had to stop playing to eat quite a few times, a game on extreme takes a full day. The huge size comes from the long duration, just checked the total length is like 10 and a half hours. 3 hours of uploading is not that bad I guess, reencoding might take longer. Already at 31%, I wonder if anyone actually will want to waste 10 hours of their life to watch it. If you do, you'll be an expert on chaos magic ...not really, I was playing quite poorly especially at the beginning, but this game was a lot of fun and some parts were quite epic.
Immune? Well, wish I'd known that.
You're right though, I should have done the Benny Hills thing with the hydras to save my heroes. I don't know why it didn't occur to me. |
