My thoughts:

Oh this is a fun clue. I wonder how similar different my mental imagery of a Barbecue is compared to others'

PARK, TABLE, and KETCHUP seem like the best candidates for me, followed by DRAFT beer and one of GLASS or MUG.

I suppose that makes me a very bad person, but, especially right after the Australian disaster, the word I'd associate most readily with "Barbecue" is GIANT.
And from there, the Australian context would lead me to PLATYPUS.

DWARF and KIWI are obvious. Don't really know where to go after that, as I don't know the series that well:

UNICORN for the fantasy setting?
Do they DANCE?
Is there a STREAM in the village?
Maybe MINT/OLIVE as well for possible plants in the village or CAT for animals?

I think UNICORN is worth a guess but don't like the others much.

It's funny, I immediately started this clue the same way thinking DWARF and KIWI were obvious.  Except the name of the character isn't Kiwi, I realized.  The dwarf's name is Kili.  But then again, if we're all making the same mistake then I guess it works?
I would go with DANCE and STREAM for my other two guesses here.  And no, I don't remember any of the words.  Though I want to check so badly right now

The hobbit features a band of DWARVES, the film was made in New Zealand from which the word KIWI is a national nickname. The author is considered a GENIUS, akin to SHAKESPEARE, and the books are produced on a PRESS.

Does anyone know where Tolkein was when he wrote hte book? Was he in India or Washington?

95% sure Tolkien was in Oxford when writing. 4.9% I'm confusing it with Cambridge. 0.1 for everywhere else in the world combined.

Nice ambitious clues from both sides this game. I like:

- Black QUEEN
- Black OLIVE
- Men in Black SUITs
- Black BAT

Other options that I like less include:
- Black PLASTIC garbage bags
- DECK of poker cards with Black clubs/spades

My immediate thought for the 3rd pointy thing was India. It's shaped with a pointy end sticking into the sea.
