Something we've pondered in the past is how, while at war, the person going second in a (simultaneous turns) pitboss has several advantages, they:
1. get their production done at the end of turn, while their opponent doesn't, meaning at the start of a war they can move units twice before an opponent's builds complete
2. can re-connect pillaged resources and re-establish blockaded trade routes
3. can control wonders at the turn roll (e.g. Gt Lighthouse)
There are a few things in favour of the first player, they can:
1. promote and promo-heal their units before their opponent plays (whether from XP earned the previous turn or on new units)
2. hide newly-produced units from prying eyes (if the enemy has vision on a city tile)
3. see newly-produced units from the opponent
4. get email notification of their turn
None of this is the same strength as the production bonus that the second player gets, but at least it's something. However no. 1 is undermined by the auto-promote option. This allows the second player to promo-heal and (usually) get a useful promotion on a unit. The option was clearly intended just for lazy players who like automating workers and can't be bothered working out what the optimal promotion path is, so I think auto-promote should be disabled in RtR (and you might even want to consider killing it in CtH Charriu).
