[SPOILER] On This Day

(May 26th, 2021, 12:12)Mr. Cairo Wrote: The reason I never gave you Open Borders was because from what I had understood from Serdoa was that we had never had OB, so I didn't want to give you the info from exploring my land (and I was in Merc so there was no benefit economically). I had hoped the Defensive Pact would signal my intentions, but clearly it had the wrong effect.

When I took over from Serdoa I got the impression (not sure if it was a correct one) that you were my number one enemy and were about to attack me with Knights at any moment. I only really got out of that mindset when Tarkeel became the obvious leader. That is also what screwed me over with tech so much, I spent far too long worrying about you attacking me that I let things like tech slide. I probably could have the gotten the Music Great Artist and the Taj Mahal for example, but instead I went for techs to give me Pikes and Knights so I wouldn't die to your Knights.

Caravels managed to map out most of your land. We had hostile relationship with Serdoa all game pretty much. He was the early runaway and I expected to have to take him down, but somehow I managed to catch up to him and then went to attack Ruff to keep growing. Btw if you don't have time to read all the thread, at least go look at the time when our stacks were dancing aronud Ruff's capital. I was freaking out.

Yeah, I could see that from your movements around his cap lol In retrospect I would have been a lot better off getting OB with Ruff from the start of your attack instead of declaring war on him, but I didn't have a good understanding of the map at that point, and thought I could take a few cities of his before you, but you got there much faster than I expected.

I also still thought I was in a better position than you even with your conquests so I was quite happy just to keep freaking you out and slowing down your conquest. Of course, in the end what land I had (even including my conquests from AT) couldn't match what you and Tarkeel ended up with. So that was a mistake.

Also, what you say about Serdoa being a runaway, I now kinda think that his own failed attack against Ruff really set him (and then me) back. He had been building/whipping a lot of HAs at a a time when they were about to be heavily outclassed. He was pretty lacking in workers and improved tiles when I took over (imo, obviously).

Sorry for not following much towards the end, but great game.

Ah yeah, I didn't even think that was a serious war at first. It was a surprise to me how close he got to Ruff's capital.
I actually speculated about the workers when I was thinking about how I managed to catch up, so pat on my own back for that.

NP I wasn't reporting enough anyway, after a point there's just too much going on. I really appreciate all the help you gave me.

We can't do anything here. Sorry SD. I hope you will pull back.

Did you add airship damage to that? I never bothered to sim/vodka it, but I was pretty sure that stack could put a serious dent in my destroyers. Those 11ish galleons were also pretty scary...

Now that you mention it.. Nope I did not  smoke

I think it's still hopeless though, as you'll get more and more destroyers and I was 10+ turns away from my own.

Speaking of tech, something that slowed me down was too much gold used on unit upgrades. I think for the future it is better to wait until the very last moment to upgrade so you can potentially avoid it. It quickly adds up and being say 10 turns behind in tech in late game makes a difference.

We saved some gold to upgrade to destroyers for that effect; it's bloody expensive! I think it was like 300-350 for frigates and SotL. You couldn't know this, but Fondor had built a few 17xp destroyers, some of which was saving that last promotion to take blitz in case the opportunity to use it presented itself. I was pretty scared that you would force an amphibious assault on Kiffex, but I don't know how loaded those galleons were.

Edit: Another thing I never found out, where did your navy run off to?

If i had airship support... and not had a whole line of losses without any wins at all... probably could have salvaged enough of our navies to keep his from becoming too powerful even with battleships on the horizon. But with your fleet gone and having just got Destroyers myself, i couldnt pull off a 3-5to1 production disadvantage..

I only had 6 units aboard. The whole war started on a short warning. SD was going for it, so I decided fuck it, I have to go in too.
