Would be interesting to hand craft a "winning" AI personality and give them no traits or UU/UB just to see how they do.

Perhaps if the AIs increased their military research preferences once they were in a war? It would not help them prepare ahead of time, but at least once they were actually fighting they would start researching military stuff. For dominant economic powerhouses like Willem, going for rifling once he was declared on would have gotten it a lot faster than he actually did. Might not have been in time to save him, given how big an army was already inside his territory, but it would have helped. The way the economic AIs currently research, they need to be about two entire eras ahead in tech just to have miltiary equivalence with the AIs that beeline military techs. And often that is just too big a hurdle for even a Mansa or a Willem to clear.
I figure it wouldnt be too difficult to implement. Just some kind of ‘when at war have a military flavor of 10’ kind of clause. That would immediately make them prioritize military flavor techs
I think that would wildly unbalance them against the non-econ leaders. It would be a very powerful AI, but it would mop the floor with every other AI in a game. The real fun of Civ4 AI is that each leader has such personality. Forcing Gandhi to research rifles and tear Monty to shreds kind of takes the fun out of both of them.
There are plenty of good econ AIs that are also good at war; let the extremes be extremes IMO. (Not that Sullla would ever consider a modified AI anyway, but it's something to think about before you alter your own games.)
It would not even need to be as extreme as going to maximum military preference. Something like +3 military preference for each rival civ the AI is at war with (cap at an appropriate max value) would probably be enough. I like the flavoring of the AIs for research, giving them more personality, and would miss it if they all became the same during the frequent centuries-long wars. They just need to include circumstances in their choices, like "Oh, we are being conquered right now, losing a city every turn or two. Maybe I should think about some better units?"
Kublai deserves some credit for timing his attack on Willem just about perfectly. He had a narrow window of opportunity to make his move before Willem ran away with the game, and he used it perfectly. If Kublai had not gone insane later and thrown away the game with his culture slider stupidity, we would all be celebrating a fantastic championship game and how good Kublai's performance was. Sadly, he did implode in a giant fireball of idiocy. Charlemagne played a decent opening, and his conquest of a big chunk of Russia was a strong move. He did OK in most of the later fighting also. But he was otherwise not anything special, and mostly just kept advancing steadily while other AIs that should have beaten him by 50 turns or more choked the game away. "I don't want the championship. Winning is icky!" "I don't want it either!" "OK, I guess if you guys don't want it...." Wouldn't be too surprised if it's along the lines of "Mansa but designed to get to Archery and Rifling quicker".

Also Roosevelt pronounced his own name Rose-a-velt and not the Dutch way that Sullla says. What do you mean? Since Charlemagne is a French name I feel (except for the first syllable ) Sullla is not too far off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmuMvgnRWTk Geez, I checked the American pronounciation on Youtube - that is just wrong. I really wonder why the English language butchers the pronounciation of certain French words so badly, while being much closer on others? Anyway, thanks to Sullla and everyone else involved in Season 4 and congratulations to the winner!
Why did his French name stick in the English-speaking world? You could just have made your lives easy and called him Carl the Great, but it's too late now
Well, at least you can always call him Burger King in Civ! (July 22nd, 2019, 14:22)Fluffball Wrote: The real fun of Civ4 AI is that each leader has such personality. While I do enjoy personalities I also want the AI to play a decent game, I've never enjoyed beating up on AIs that simply refuses to research rifling. And it's not like it's just 1 or 2 AIs that takes forever to pick up rifling. Getting military techs when at war isn't "personality", that's just basic gameplay. So is going heavy on cottages and infrastructure, but that would ruin the personalities of the war mongers. Most of the low peace weight civs go out of their way to not win the game, but I wouldn't want them "fixed" to play Civ4 better. If you're beating up the AI too easily, turn up the difficulty. Deity Gandhi is going to get rifles like 80 turns before I do. |
