Here's a last overview of the starting areas with resources on, as I mentioned.

Start A - some peak tiles added to islands to create more 1 tile wide channels.




Start B - some peak tiles added to islands to create more 1 tile wide channels.




Start C - additional wet rice added to grassland region near start, peak tiles added to nearby islands.




Start D - island made of peaks added to create bigger barrier and chokepoints to naval action between start D, start E. Several grass hills and plains turned into flat grassland in starting area to give more of a 'core region' for cottaging, comparable to the other starts.




Start E - aforementioned peak island, coast near peak island turned to plains to discourage settling on that line of hills near E's capital. More food added near early copper sites.




If this all looks good, then I am OK to edit in the player's picks in the map once they are made, and the game should be good to go from there.

@greenline: You are influencing cold rain quite a bit which is maybe OK in a beginner game. One issue is though that you are wrong. Slowly building work boat working the banana is a very strong opening, almost certainly the best way to open (depending a bit on starting techs). Krill already wrote something about it earlier in the thread.

I only made one post in coldrain's thread, which had the starting screenshot. He seems to be getting a lot of advice from Dreylin, who is his dedlurker.

I believe that setting the formal map size to small would be best here, but standard should also work.

Island cities stuffed full of praets will be a fun time for someone to siege. I don't think the second promotion on the praets is the deciding factor, though. 45 hammers for an 8 strength defender is just a really good deal. You need three promotions to get formation, which is the only really good defensive promotion they can take, since I don't think praets can take pinch.

Shock is the what you want with AGG. Is the map too big, to make that viable? Also, you can get formation easily with Vassalage, not sure about Amphibious.
