[SPOILERS] Bobchillingworth Presents: The Six Million Dollar Golem

Here are the start of turn 51 pictures of my two cities:

UNATCO

Once the Brewing House finishes I'll start working both the bananas and rice for faster settler production. The grassland forest hill 1N of the city will get a mine to keep elves from being able to abuse forests to hit the city center quickly. The others have / will have lumbermills.

Liberty Island

Game mechanics question- Liberty Island has two grassland forest lumbermill tiles. Both are on a river, but only one gives commerce. What's up with that?

I've seen that kind of thing before, but never really thought about the mechanical difference. My only thought is whether or not the forest is on a straight section or corner of a river.

That looks like a bug to me.

I remember reading a thread in civfanatics about it. The commerce for lumbermills work just like with tiles avaiable for watermills. It has to be in a tile where the river pass as a straight line, so you don't get it in a corner like that. It doesn't work the same way as the fresh water and river commerce mechanics.

Thanks for the info. That's kind of strange (do curved banks somehow make riverside lumbermills less lucrative? I honestly do not know!), but good to know for the future. I'll eventually chop down that forest then for a cottage, but I'll leave it in place for the time being since I want the production available anyway.

Oh man, while thinking about the game I realized that I totally had the wrong idea with my starting mana. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with my civ / spell choices, but there's something that would have been much better (probably best with Kandros)-

Life 1.

Why? Because you can use it on a grave to get a free Host of the Whatever! A free strength 5 angel (or two or three) would have been huge at the start of the game- even more so if I had found the Pyre with them and converted them to fire elementals!

Actually I've noticed that there don't seem to be any graves at all on this map. If it's not a spoiler, was this a conscious decision designed to thwart exactly the kind of strategy I posited above? Good thinking if so.

you have it at your palace should you get the chance...

Yeah, but there aren't any graves nearby. And the real advantage would be in getting an ultra-early Strength 5 Angel unit. At this point, I'd be better off popping any grave & hoping for a tech.

Oh that's how I have contact:

Jungle is burning, so I guess he sent his adept over with blaze and then hit me with Floating Eye while he was at it. I'll declare in a couple turns to get a better look at his city- skeleton is expendable, of course wink

Ffffffffffuck. fuck fuck fuckfuckfucukk. Lost Gunther at ridiculous odds vs. a gryphon I wanted to capture. Ah well. Anna can still hopefully get me a few spiders, but I won't be able to send Gunther in against the Rev now.

My skeleton killed a giant spider while standing on that hill, so I took shock and will heal in a turn. Then I'm moving in. I'm thinking of hitting the Rev with a couple warriors and an archer or two as a pillage party- keep him behind so that I can clean up with wood golems and catapults. Archers are 1 or 2 turn builds at UNATCO, so it doesn't require more than a half-dozen turns investment on my part, including the archery range.
