Do barbs seriously get promo-heals? I've never noticed that in the past!

Ah, I assumed they were adjacent turns (because 1st shot had Archer at 3t, 2nd shot had Archer at 2t). It's actually like 4 turns between them.

Yeah, I'm sorry for the lazy reporting.

This was at the beginning of the latest turn. I swapped the archers, then killed the spear with three shots. Worker is finally gonna be back home after running around the countryside fleeing barbarians. I started a spear in Vienna, can't do shit before all the barb camps are cleared. Only a single improvement has been finished since the Pyramids, and even that one got pillaged. This is the worst start I've ever played in Civ5. We're last in every single demographic except production, in which we are second-to-last. Diplomatic Marriage won't help since there are less city states than in normal games, and because of the map script they are all located on tiny islands off the coast of the Pangaea. I'm regretting leaving my comfort zone and trying something new. There's no coming back from this, but I'll give it a shot anyway

Taking the fight to their camps. Starting to get improvements up finally. Got a social policy, took the free worker.
Azza landed a religion and took the best stuff: Pagodas and Tithe. I would not complain if it spread to us, pagodas are very nice for going wide.
Azza plz connect a spare luxury already. It will benefit both of us

Found the northern camp. Vienna finished the spear. Next up stone works -> settler. Salzburg will finish a granary next turn, and I will keep it growing. Might be time to build a shrine, and/or chariot archers. Once it's 4-5 pop, then time for the next Settler.

My biggest mistake with this opening was that I did not prioritize religion. I reckon I should have delayed the Pyramids for a while more and built a shrine in my capital. Then take up Stone Circles as my pantheon, and hopefully be first or second to a religion and grab Tithe/Ceremonial Burial and Pagodas/Peace Gardens. The benefits are good in a tall game, but even stronger in wide where you have more places to build the buildings that give extra happiness. Basically new cities create more happiness than normally, which allows for even more cities to be built.

Woohooo! (Not like The Sims) I met Jkaen and sent him a luxury deal. Scout was lucky to survive this far, Azza is having a barbarian problem to his north. Jkaen went Liberty. If I was in a race for the Pyramids, I will feel a bit better about my decision to not build a shrine first.
Connected the sugar for +4 happiness. Another +4 from Jkaen will take me to +9 happiness and I can breathe a sigh of relief on that front for a while. I organized Vienna to grow on the same turn it completes the stone works. It will build a settler next at size 5. Salzburg is building a shrine while it grows.

If you're micromanaging tiles to make that happen, that actually might be slightly inefficient. You're (undesirably) maximizing the time that accumulated food and production dwell in the boxes before getting used. If you have the tiles available, it's better to complete either the growth or production item ASAP then switch to the other, so you would have the pop or stone works producing for an extra turn or two.
