[Spoilers] What have the Romans ever done for us?

Well my military is comfortably bigger than everybody elses and hopefully will almost double soon if I land that wonder (i have an eclectic mix)

I was late to the 2nd round of expansion though, so am much smaller than i should be. need to decide who exactly to attack. South of me in MEiz, then between the other 2 is a buffer of city states, it may be time to start killing those off rather than take on a player, we will see

Well doubled my military notice that Azza current is beating me on that stat in the demo though.

About to start trying to roll over soem useless city states in the middle of my cities to catch up pop and landmass wise (winning in economy atm. Think last I checked Meiz had 6 techs on me but I am trying to go deep not broad right now)

Clear 3rd in score, trailing in all demographics but power, so decided to try and bulk up and invade before its too late.

My tech is cannons and muskets, just glanced in the nearest city and seen gattling guns waiting for me, guess its already too late frown

Big mistake in this game (apart from being awful at updating this thread) is not pushing the expansion, possibly through Meiz, midgame. I am now too small and dont have the abiltiy to comete with the big 2 now

Hmm seems I may have been mistaken in the issue, from what I read in other threads I may have spread myself too thin rather than just growing the cities tall.

As another note I really got caught out my not noticing the huge difference in city strength between military and non-military city states

City spamming is really nerfed with BNW, due to 5% tech increase per city founded (I think it's little less for conquered cities). I usually focus on growth and the production/gold output just follows along with that almost automatically. I think one of the keys for your start would have been sending food with cargo ships to your capital, which would have greatly increased your science.

City spam is nerfed, but not solely from the 5% tech cost increase. That's only a small amount, and only penalises having a huge disparity between your small cities and your core cities.

1) Ceremonial Burial nerfed down to 0.5smile/city, instead of 1smile/city (why they changed this but not tithe is weird)
2) Intermediate happiness buildings were nerfed down to 2smile/city
3) Buffs to tradition, it is so much better that you can support even a wideish empire with zero SPs in liberty.
4) Trade routes. This is the big one. Gold being moved from rivers/coasts to trade routes has several implications. Trade route numbers don't scale with number of cities, meaning you get just as much gold with many cities as with fewer cities. It also means that by feeding the capital with several food routes, you can effectively force your capital to rapidly grow into the mid-30s by the renaissance.
