What would people think of a map where everyone starts on their own (probably mirrored) mini-continent; who sandboxes best is the largest part of the early competition? The continents would be galley-reachable from one another. Or one like Pitboss ... I'll look it up in a minute [Edit: never mind; it was a PBEM, and I can't find it - I think the team NobleHelium was on won it], where there was a large central island everyone had to race to settle? Just throwing out ideas; I'm fine with a perfectly normal game as well. Was this preferred, or more normal map?

Sounds like Miguelito -> THH -> Me -> Alhazard, unless THH would rather play after me. Seems that my slot is square in the middle of his, so there's no obvious right answer there.
@Commodore's question: I like THH's proposal.

I think I would rather play after you, Mardoc, if that's okay, since I'm often busy getting groceries, making dinner, etc. in the earlier part of that timeslot.
I've updated the settings post again. It looks like Corporations will be allowed. I have also opened Barbarians and Tribal Villages to voting, since some interest has been expressed in those. Alhazard, did you have an opinion on either of those (I have recorded mine along with those already expressed)? Does anyone have any further thoughts on the map, or a central continent for all to scrabble for shall it be? (If so, yeah, a cylinder, as per your suggestion, Commodore, would seem to make the most sense. And thanks again!)

Definitely no huts, and I vote for no barbs. I would be ok with a map like PBEM 21 with each player on a small island on the corners and a donut with a central island.

Just want to pint out that playing without barbs AND with isolated starts sounds like very little early game action... that might be fun of course, but we should be clear on that.
Map size hasn't been discussed so far, has it? I would vote for a rather small map, like 8-12 cities / player. Games seem to have collapsed in a good part due to excessively large empires that nobody wanted to handle lately, and I would like to avoid that.

Hey guys, I moved this thread to the new PBEM 65 forum: http://realmsbeyond.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?fid=224
I labeled the game as:
BTS - AI Diplomacy - 4 Players - Quick Speed
Please let me know if that isn't correct, I only skimmed the setup here. Have fun!

Actually, with the starts on islands like that, it'll probably be pretty easy to fog-bust the barbarians out of the picture for the start. I imagine they'd only really come into play when we hit the mainland. Actually, this could add some interest while not unbalancing the crucial early turns excessively. I guess I'm okay with barbarians in that case (this also breaks the tie on that vote).
As for the number of cities, I think that might be a good suggestion, Miguelito. The one proviso is that the central continent is supposed to feel like a bigger, unknown world to explore and colonize, as opposed to something you can peer over and see the other guy's homeland, metaphorically. If it keeps that feel, I think that is a good suggestion. One other point, though, is that Commodore may have already started working on the map, and we don't want to make him start over again when he's already given a chunk of his valuable time to us. So 'mapmaker's discretion' is perfectly fine by me too.
It's looking like there will be barbarians, but no tribal villages for this game.
