All right, I'll take spymaster for round 1.
Then we have a while to figure out who gets the role round 2 and beyond (while simultaneously winning this round ). Anyone want to throw a name in the hat for round 2? I want to try both sides (and I bet the rest of you do too) so round 2 should be someone else.

I think we should point to Novel as the obvious match. But then I'd probably lean towards passing. I don't think the second word is obvious at all, and we can catch up later.
Tentative guesses for the second word:
Opera
Amazon (the store)
King (the author)
Laser (printer)
As I said, I don't see anything obvious.
If you know what I mean.

Alright, let the shenanigans begin! I like to spoiler our first impressions of a clue so that we don't unduly influence each other, especially with teams of 4 guessing.

I'll volunteer as round 2 spymaster, since this is my second round of guessing.

Arrgh, clicked the lurker thread again . Didn't see anything; I have now turned on thread protection, I don't know why I didn't do that sooner.

OH: I might still be bumped out, so I'm fine if you play spymaster.

Hmm, I seem to be alone in thinking that opera is the clear candidate. As a pit musician and frequent attendee of the SF Opera, I've only ever heard the creative process referred to as writing an opera, not composing or scoring it.
Consider also that some other possibilities could have been more unambiguously suggested:
Novel + Amazon: Bookstore
Novel + King: Writer
Novel + Laser: Printed
Novel + Mass: Reading
EDIT: If that last one seems a bit loose, I spent the last couple months with my brother and sister-in-law, a Catholic who asked that I go to Mass with them. The first substantive part of the service is the Liturgy of the Word, composed of "a Reading from <Old Testament>," "a Reading from the Gospel," and the priest's Homily. No idea if our Spymaster would've made that connection, but there it is

I agree that Opera is the most likely second word. I'm just not sure that it's worth trying to guess it right away. We can guess it later with more confidence. But it looks like we may have a consensus for starting with Novel.
Jkaen, you should point to Novel when you check in, if you agree.
If you know what I mean.
