A rules clarification (by the way, what ever happened to the rules post? I can't find it in the archives):
As I understand it, you can spell clues in the original game to distinguish between, say, "Air" and "Heir". That's obviously not a problem in this online game, but words which have different meanings for different pronunciations could be confusing. Let's say I want to clue "Lead (short E)" to point my team toward BULLET and BOOT while trying not to confuse them with OFFICER or GUIDE (which would be Lead (long E)). What do people think? I think you should be able to clue with a pronounciation online. The oral game provides for exactly the analogous situation reversed: you may clue with a spelling.
If there's any debate about how exactly you want to indicate the pronounciation, clear it with the opposing spymaster and/or game admin.
I agree, but the pronunciation clarification should be done only with sound descriptions. If the clue is "close," you could say, "close with s pronounced as z is normally" or "close with unvoiced s" but not "close as in near."
Like, if the clue is "bass," you can't say "with a as in cat, not a as in cake." It's too easy to slip in additional information. What I don't know, and we should clarify, is if you can refuse to give the clarification. Maybe you want "bass" to clue "FISH" and "ORGAN." Can you decline to answer about pronunciation? I'm not even sure if this is allowed in the regular game. If you were to say "aid" but also want to indicate "aide" (maybe for "SECRETARY"), are you allowed to decline to spell?
Your team shouldnt be allowed to ask for clarification, if you as the clue giver want to clue any of the below its up to you, but I think once clued the guessers make do with what they have. (I would say take the phonetics from dictionary.com)

Completed: RB Demogame - Gillette, PBEM46, Pitboss 13, Pitboss 18, Pitboss 30, Pitboss 31, Pitboss 38, Pitboss 42, Pitboss 46, Pitboss 52 (Pindicator's game), Pitboss 57
In progress: Rimworld
I'd suggest pronunciation clarifications be run by the opposing spymaster before posting, with the game admin adjudicating any disputes. Rules about what words can be used to give pronunciation IMHO starts to move away from a good faith attempt to clue using only a single word.
Hey, I just remembered that NEW and YORK were separate words back in the Codenames 9 grid. But NEW YORK is a single card in the real Codenames deck. Same bug as we had with LOCH/NESS. Can whoever's running the generator handle that too?
ICE CREAM is another two-word card in the real deck. I can't think of any others offhand but there might be. |
