I can't say that I'm convinced that "active players 2 years after release" is the best metric for the success of a game, particularly between games of quite different genres. smile
Incidentally, AoW3 was released 3 years ago, OTC ~1 year ago.

1. I think Yuri is correct about Soren and we don't care about what that airhead Trip thinks. I'd guess that he didn't like Firaxis putting out the game before it was done (it didn't finish because it was Firaxis first HD game and they didn't adjust successfully).

I think you are both wrong about Brain--Civ2 had enough flaws to justify a direct squeal. That was Brain's plan but he just ditched Firaxis to found BHG before Civ3 was finished.

2. I'm talking about being personally successful so genre issue don't matter here. I also thought that AoWs3 being two years older than OTC makes things much worse which would override the weakness of the metric but we mistyped it.

MJW, judging whether a person is "successful" according to raw sales of a game they produced would already be exceptionally narrow-minded. Judging a person's success on the online playership of a game they produced a year after it was released, using a completely unrelated game as a yardstick, is just mind-bogglingly insane. Real-life choices of workplace, work environment, and work projects are not micromanagement optimization tasks where the "right decision" will maximize some number that represents "success" - least of all an arbitrary and pointless one like this. It's the person's life, not a game.

Optimizing the use of three workers captured from Lisbon though? That sounds like a cool piece of game-play! I'm looking forward to seeing how that goes ... and what those prowling, opportunistic Jags run across in the way of opportunities!

Optimising Workers would've been interesting. Optimising Builders... I have three cities and three Builders, all cities have special tiles which need improving, so just do that

And yes, completely agree that evaluating OTC by comparing it to a completely different game is not really accurate. Was the game a commercial success for Mohawk Games? For their publisher? Are Soren and the rest of the team happy with the final state of the game? Was it well received? How fun is it? Those are the metrics I would've used, and I think OTC does well on those metrics. Definitely well enough to vindicate Soren's decision to leave Firaxis

Anything other than commercial success is so subjective you cannot even argue about it. Now usually I would use the number of sales but OFC was the first game of a genre so it would be at a disadvantage. I can guess how successful future Soren games will be though. Losing 10x to another indie game that's two years older than you, that is SP focused so you tend to play&play until you are done and only had around twice the number of sales is very bad.

It is subjective. Gaming in general is subjective. Using any objective criteria you can come up with, Civ5 is a better game than Civ4

That's true.

The key problem is that Civ5 only fails for the top 10% of players. An argument saying that Civ5 is a bad failed game would have to rely on ignoring 90% of gamers. That action alone adds so much subjectivity that there's no way to win an argument against someone good.

The whole Soren thing is also extremely subjective. I was just expressing how I was feeling. If you say that trashing someone for how you feel is not acceptable then I would be able to prove that you cannot do anything because everything is subjective. 

I'll let you have the last post one this because this is getting too abstract and far away from Civ6...

Sorry for responding to the trolling. I was going to use a metaphor about defining true love on the basis of the number of upvotes someone receives on social media (everything else is subjective!) but then I realized the post I was responding to was basically just a word salad made from hot chile peppers. I do favor getting back to Civ though!

Well, if you want to talk Civ, here's the current overview smile




Lisbon and Xochicalco have their special tiles improved (I bought the stone for Xochicalco). The builder at the capital is going to improve the seafood, then mine the hill NW of the citrus (once he gets there.. slowly... I hate Civ6 movement rules so much....). Settler is on the way to found the 4th city, and Jags are on the way to see if they can find something interesting & exciting, like an unprotected city
