Turn 3
A quick turn today, and an easy update so far. I remember to zoom out the map and check my position this turn, which is an improvement from last turn: Near the western edge. Going to need to explore mostly north and south, then, but I also want to locate the coast first. Like I said, the plan is to stay fairly close to home at first, keeping my military units in the area until I know who my neighbors are. If Sumeria's one of 'em, then I want to know how many warcarts are coming my way before Rowain does. If Sumeria is next to my nextdoor neighbor, then I want to either send my army to stop Rowain cold, or get in on the kill - although that would let Sumeria just run over ME next...Probably gonna do the former. Help a neighbor out against an early warcart rush, keep Sumeria from running away with the game, and then science my way to victory. Right now I have 40% odds Sumeria is next door, 40% he's next door to next door, and 20% that he's opposite me. So I need to plan 40% defend self/30% do nothing (since Rowain could attack a distant neighbor)/20% intervene next door if I can. Here's the local neighborhood this turn: More lakes, and some diamonds! A city in this area is looking real nice - with a Seowon, those diamonds will yield 3/3/1, and the two hills next to it represent a further +1 science apiece. However, to get the optimal seowon placement, I don't want to settle next to the hill - Seowon is no-touchy! Perhaps on the stone? I hate to waste it, but the other tile, northeast of my warrior, has NO first-ring hills - I'd have to buy the Seowon AND the diamonds and probably the other two hills as well. But NOT settling there means I have fewer cities overall...Ah, what the hell, these games never last long enough to fill the dotmap, and I have more time to think about it. Plan right now is to settle on the stone.

Hi there! First time poster here at RB, though I've been lurking for a while - observing most of the PBEMs so far. I'm a fan of your thorough reporting and level demeanor and share your tendency to builder-itis. I'd offer to DL* this one (and I'm staying unspoiled) but there's just a few things standing in the way: (1) I'm not very good, (2) I have no MP experience at all, (3) I couldn't commit to full attention, and (4) I don't have R&F. So just a few things!
That said, I wanted to offer a thought re: city placement - figured I'd ask first so I don't interfere if my input isn't welcome. Good luck on your solo effort! *Think I have the DL rules/custom down: don't look at any threads other than the organizing thread and your player's. Anything else? So just a few things! Hey, welcome aboard! Just 7 months ago I was also lurking - I finally started dedlurking oledavy in PBEM4 'coz I liked his reporting style. No worries about ability - as you can tell, I also am not very good, and have no multiplayer experience whatsoever. So we can learn together, eh? And yeah, Ichabod has it right - constantly urge me to seek blood in order to slake your thirst for entertainment, don't read other threads 'til the game is over, and we should be good. As for city placement, I was thinking about two cities now - perhaps one on the cattle, and one on the flatland just east of the stone.

I'll chime in when I have a chance and something to offer. And that^ is exactly what I was going to say. The cattle will give a 3 food city center tile (right?), leaving room for a city either on the coffee or 1E of the stone. Cattle city will have a 2/2 tile to work immediately vs stone city's 3/1 + 3/0. If there's a hill 1W of the diamonds for the seowon it seems almost strictly better to go cattle. Seowon could also go adjacent to mountain (with -1) if worst comes to worst; it would still be worth +4 -1 +2 sci on mines for +5 from all 1st-ring tiles So size 1 cattle is 3/1 + 2/2 = 5/3; size 2 is 3/1 + 2/2 + 1/2 = 6/5 size 1 stone is 2/1 + 3/1 = 5/2; size 2 is 2/1 + 3/1 + 2/1 or 3/0 = 7/3 or 8/2 Cattle has horses, diamonds, chocolate 2nd ring (+maybe seowon location w 2 mines 2nd ring; or seowon 1st ring with no chop, -1, and 2 mines 2nd ring later?) Stone has horses 1st ring, diamonds, coffee, seowon location 2nd ring w 1 mine 2nd and 1 mine 3rd Overall cattle seems better to me - of course it depends what else the warrior reveals. One of my common mistakes/crutches in SP is tile-buying sprees after not doing enough city pre-planning; in MP that's a horrendous waste of gold. From reading the PBEM threads one thing that impressed me was the need to plan out city tiles in advance and not look beyond the 2nd ring except in extreme circumstances. Other option I would point out is settling on the horses. Also gives the 3 food center tile at the cost of working the good horse tile, but would allow the seowon to go on the hill next to the mountain in 2nd ring. It will also be slower to develop, buying the diamonds might be needed. Seems worse than the others to me but maybe worth considering. I think I'm leaning towards the cattle. Horses I considered, but like you it seems worse than the others. Right now, I like cattle because it gets me a decent spot, and it keeps open a spot on the other lake - which you'll see is pretty nice! Great work on the math, I'm rubbish at considerations like that. I'll get a dotmap up once I've explored more terrain. Speaking of... Turn 4 Moved the warrior, clicked next turn. Here's what we found: The spot next to the stone is looking good - first tile rice and coffee, and TONS of hills in the second ring. As Korea, you really want at least one second-ring hill to plant your campus on, to get the full benefit, and I've got plenty of candidates. The more adjacent hills, the better - basically, seowons become the real center of the city, as the mines around it provide the city with production and science, the boosted farms provide lots of food, meaning you've got every yield you need except culture and gold. Culture I'm hoping to jury-rig via Choral Music if I can, via Jesuit Education if I can't. My Holy Sites don't have to compete with Campuses for Mountain adjacencies, which is nice, and there's lots of non-mountain hills for my Seowons to sit on. I glance at the score and someone is a lucky duck: Turns out Era score is recorded, too! Let's look at my list and see what Alhambram may have found.
Well, barring a VERY early world wonder or something, he most likely found a Natural Wonder. I never find one of those early, it seems. :/ In PBEM7 it took me something like 50 turns. I don't mind the era score, but I want to boost Astrology soon, so hopefully there's one in my neighborhood, too.

Turn 5
These turn reports go quick in the early days. I forgot how easy it is before you have half a dozen cities, a dozen units, and multiple international relations to report on each turn. I moved the warrior, I moved a new citizen, I clicked next turn. Here's my warrior move: There's a city just south of me. If I'm lucky, it's a wonderful city-state (I'd like a cultural one, please, my science will be fine). If I'm unlucky, it's Sumeria and I'll have warcarts all over my land in about 20 turns. So, fingers crossed on that front, eh, boyos? In other news, I, like most of my competitors, grew to size 2: The AI wanted to set the new citizen to the high production tile, finishing the slinger in 4 turns, growing in 7. However, I overrode the robot, opting for a food in place of a hammer. I want to build an early settler, and I want to be at least size 3 before I do that. By swapping in a food for a hammer, both the slinger and the citizen pop in 5 more turns. I'll take the 1-turn delay in exploration in return for 2 turns of the bonus citizen. Right now, I'm planning on churning out an early settler to colonize that lovely lake area. I think alternating military unit - settler - military unit - builder will establish a good growth curve in the early game without exposing myself overmuch. Remember, I'm not out chasing era scores - I'm happy to trade a Classical Dark Age for a Medieval Heroic Age, if I can. Hence, a relative lack of emphasis on scouting early - instead, let's learn our local neighborhood, let's stay safe, and be confident that our unique district can be leveraged to shoot us ahead later, once we're secure.

Turn 6
Again, a turn wherein I move the warrior and hit next turn. However, this time I know from the settler map that I'm approaching a city, so I march south for it. Instead of the city, I find - well, I'll show you: Alhambram. Just a 5 turn march from my capital, and that's including the rough terrain I've crossed to get there. Just lovely. It's better news than finding Sumeria next door, sharpening his war carts, but I'd hoped for a bit more elbow room, y'know? Furthermore, that wretch has met MY city-state, Antioch!: To be honest, this is a little frustrating. It's entirely possible that Alhambram only beat me here because of turn order, and without knowing that Antioch was here ahead of time there's no way I'd have been able to get here faster - I marched in pretty much a straight line south from my capital. But through the vagaries of turn order, he'll have an extra 2 gpt until I can complete Antioch's quest. Bah. Still, it's not all bad. I know that Alhambram met a Natural wonder on turn 4, which means that within a 4-6 tile radius of his warrior, there's a natural wonder (since he can't have finished a unit yet and gotten it out to scout). I can rule out the southwest, since Antioch is there, so either he came from the west - unlikely, since the map edge is there - or he came from the east and south. So, I'll head that direction, find the wonder, and boost my Astrology. Note that also, through the vagaries of the map and the direction I decided to scout, I'll also lose out on the 3 era score to Alhambram. I don't mind too much, since I'm aiming for a Dark Age anyway, but still, what good is a spoiler thread if not for petty whining? So, hence why I'm mad at Alhambram. That sneaky little jerk DARED to scout NORTH with his warrior, and found things first that SHOULD rightfully have been found by ME first. The cheek! The effrontery! The sheer unmitigated gall! ...do you think he'll accept a Declaration of Friendship?
