Turn 034

Suboptimal finds my borders




With his warrior coming north I have to hold off on killing the barb camp, so my warrior retreats and my 2nd slinger comes down from the capital. Finding some good luxuries up north. Probably my 4th city goes up there to claim all those luxuries. Right now I'm trying to get a campus and a monument down to improve my research; 2nd campus is locked in but I probably don't need to build it right away. More units first i think.

We have iron. 2 sources in our area and 1 in our borders (but not yet hooked)




Suboptimal also has iron at his capital. I wonder if we all got that.

Turn 042




More economy gains. Early Empire finished this turn and I switched to the +50% settler card. The governor was the real thing I wanted to push for here, and I selected Pingala. I'm hoping that combining Inca's innate food with the +growth pantheon with Pingala will mean a fantastic tech rate. Now I'll go along the top half of the civics tree to finish up the techs for Political Philosophy.

I know I said I should do military, but since suboptimal has the world's weakest military I'm not really feeling any pressure to build units until after I get Craftsmanship done. So I'll build another builder instead and then hope to lock in a couple Commerce Hubs to solve my gold problem. The builder is going to hook up the iron and then farm the rice tile. 3rd charge will be for city #3, which right now I think wants to be up by the luxuries. After the builder we'll have the +50% for melee units and get a few more warriors in. Next tech is likely Irrigation.

Science we're tops in. Culture we're weak. I'm hoping Pingala shores up the latter when I get to State Property.

Turn 048

I think I'm okay here...




I'm almost certain the trader moves at end of turn after I hit enter. In single player it goes this way, and in MP the screen goes straight to an option to save the file, so to make more certain I went back and double checked the turn that the trader finished (42) and then counted tiles.

It also doesn't help that I just moved out of Discipline last turn, changing to Agoge when Craftsmanship came in. If I still was in Discipline then I think I kill that barb scout. But the real mistake was having my southern slinger off my road netowrk. That meant my settler which just finished last turn in Abberoth can only move 1 tile north safely.

Turn 049

Trader is ok




But more barbarians coming. I upgraded a slinger for 60g and I hope to not have to do that again. Really in need of gold, but the next settler is going to take care of a lot of that with it's placement. Actually the game wants me to settle west of the horse. It's the best freshwater situation, but at the same time all the good tiles then become too far away. So we settle on the coast and we'll have to get an aqueduct in.

My builder at the capital has hooked up my iron and now it's going to chop the spot marked for my government plaza, chopping in another builder. 3rd charge is for the rice at the capital or the new city.

Turn 052

My first disaster!




Unfortunately there's no boost to yields, but at least we didn't lose a population either.

We are slaying it in early technology: 9 techs and the next highest civ is at 6. Pingala coming into the capital certainly helped that more; when State Property comes in then we'll get some more culture as well. I've been building builders with the +30% policy card lately; after State Property we'll go back for settlers. Well, we may just get a government plaza down first and wait until I get to Political Philosophy.

The barbarians are killed; another archer had come down and so I had to do a 2nd upgrade in order to get all the barbs killed without losing any of my own. But it will pay off with my 3rd city coming in next turn.

Turn 054




State Property is done, so Pingala gets a promotion and my culture per turn is doubled.

I swapped policy cards to Conscription because I don't plan on building any military soon and want to save some money; and also to Urban Planning because I want to finish up some districts and buildings here. The capital needs a Commerce Hub and a granary; Abberath planted its government plaza but needs to finish its campus first; and the new city Ryslatha really wants a monument to start off.

But I could easily have just decided to push out 2 more settlers here. Maybe that was the better play even; I'll do it after a bit of infra.

I'm not sure what other people are up to. Nobody is really generating any great people points. Temple of Artemis was built so that would explain some production for a team. But I'm tops in number of cities and tops in military, so I'm just not sure what's going on.

Turn 056

Suboptimal placed his 3rd city...




...and I really feel like it lives up to his name. I mean, I get the location. But he wasn't in any danger of losing that spot (unless there's someone to the west I didn't see). And I don't see the point of reaching all that way and delaying a 3rd city for so long to get that spot. Maybe he'll show me something I'm missing, but I'd think you would settle that nicer area north of his capital first and then head out to Acorn with your 4th.

Oh, and I found Grenada east of Suboptimal so finally got that Political Philosophy boost
