[Mjmd #51 No Players] Mjmd Rambles - a civ story

I had read your thread, yes smile Just hadn't spent time really thinking through the picks yet. I agree, you have to be tough to take out. Problem is that there is nothing that can stand up to praets

To answer some questions:

1) Religion will only pop in the capitol if there is no other city without a religion in it. Beyond that, it's weighted by population of cities without a religion. So, if you have a size 3 and size 2 city other than the cap, it's more likely to go to the size 3 city, but it go to the size 2. Thus, if you want a religion in a specific city, it's best to time it for city #2.

2) I think the pick is fine. I think Liz was my first leader in an RB game, though I don't remember the civ. The only worry is that it's slow to get going, but you should be ok - there aren't a lot of explosive combos here - no Imp, only 2 exp and 2 creative, plus of course india has the great UU and inca the culture granary. Only issue with Fin/Phil is that fin likes cottages and phil like farms.

3) You did pick Korea, so I guess a religion is probably a decent idea. It's also a risk, cause you aren't the only myst civ and you might well be behind people (if everyone has the same start, they'll get an extra commerce from a wheat and an extra turn from settling in place) But then,

4) I'm good with the scout first plan - I think that people underestimate the value of knowing stuff. Like, for instance, how far SD is from you and if his copper is between your capitols so you guess as to when he'll send a stack of axes your way.

5) copper is usually in a place that can be accessed easily by city #2, usually just outside the fat cross if you SIP. It might even be in your current fatcross, which would be nice.

My plan was to whip city 2 down to 2 pop. In tests its been popping in city 3 ok that way with it having 3 pop.

So how does it feel to be ded lurking the only person to not settle in place? What do you think of that whole decision tree? Did I just overthink it? I really am happy with the decision assuming I didn't get screwed on copper because of it.

Well, I generally would not move unless there was a compelling reason to do so - like, say, if I moved, i could pick up a grass gem. The main reason is that map makers generally spend more time on start positions than the rest of the map.

What you lost was a 7 yield tile in a riverside wheat, which is a powerful tile.

You did pick up a fair amount of flatland, which is useful. So, I don't agree with it, but I also don't think it's game shattering or anything.

If you have 2 cities, it is not a guarantee that the religion will pop in the one with the higher population. I think it's based on ratio of candidate city sizes (so 3 woudl be 60%), but I'm not sure about that.

And, really, if you are happy with it, that's fine. I think there's a decent chance you moved copper into your fat cross, which would be a great result

And here I was thinking "well at least I have some safe room to expand to the East" and then I immediately meet Vanrober. Kublai Khan (Agg/Cre) of the Zulu. 16 tiles to my East (would have been 15 if SIP).

I think priority still has to be on the Aggressive Prats to my west, but Kublai is also not a leader who wants to sit around. Good news, my analysis on the barren waste holds true. There isn't any food that I can see for that whole zone except the fish near the top. My 4th and 5th cities will likely go south to grab those silvers. Easily the most attractive area he could potentially leap over the gap. I'm going to defog the coast on that little jut to my east and then go around him. Unless there are objections AT that scout will continue to go around and try to meet people. I'm thinking new scout will probably have to hold in the west and keep tabs on SD.

A few things:

0) Always good to find your neighbors!! That's Kublai of Zulu? I dunno the player, but that might be worse. Impi's are a nightmare. Fortunaetly, the counter for both is axes, at least for now - if you were between Rome and Egypt, the problem would be bigger.

1) it's clear that the starts aren't actually mirrored, just from looking at what little you can see there. You didn't have a lake in your fat cross.

2) I think you need to explore the area with the silvers sooner than finding distant neighbors. To me, the most important thing you can do is dotmap your land, and to do that, you need information. And the scout is the most efficient way to do that.

Those silver might end up being the source of your research - I think city #3 might need to go that way (I think 2 goes back up near the x, for copper), just to fuel a run towards construction. How many beakers do you need for math and construction? or just construction, if you bulb math and save up for construction?

4) i think the river is supposed to be yours - the stone looks to be contested area. I dunno if you'll get it - on the plus side, he seems to have scouted away from you and the land between him and the stone is desert, so he may not expand this way very fast.

0) There's probably a few people in here that you don't know including me! This is one of the 6 green players. Just picked up civ after a long time and never played multiplayer. Picked Zulu first with overall 5th pick. Not that it means much at this stage but isn't posting much and is often one of the last players to play their turn.

1) If the start is mirrored I would expect the rest to be hills rolf

2) Love of maps vs my love of value and getting known tech bonuses. I will turn around and go back down and around. Little afraid there is a land bridge down there. Also, as I'm likely to play before (he was the last player last turn so double played) if I come back around from from due west might not even scout down to the silver.

3) If I had anyone other than Aggressive Rome to my west I would 100% agree that those silvers would be priority. Hopefully with advantages in geography will be fine. Scout will go back after and see what is around him and continue to see his neighbor. I still expect them to be 4th and 5th cities.

4) Ya the way the tiles are and the utter lack of food to the east of the river makes me think its pretty safe. However, if there is one combination of the ones that could do it would be creative Zulu.

EDIT: I haven't seen SD scout come back from the west yet. With how land is laid out I'm thinking its only a small lake to my NW. Or it could have died. I think I get graphs on him next turn so can hopefully confirm.

You know, looking at this, this land seems ideal for a fin civ. A couple of long rivers, meaning a lot of cottage bonuses, with good food - even sea food.

I would have liked more green, but yes liking my two long rivers. Mind I may not be able to settle much along the one to my west if Rome is up there and its not isolated, but figure that out as we go. Moving scout to lowest silver next turn and will provide an updated screen shot then. Vanrober will not have seen my scout, so hopefully doesn't scout down to them. Obviously didn't end up revealing all the coast near him; there is also one tiny bit that I'm assuming isn't a bridge at this point. Some future chariot can defog for trade and potential religion spreads.

I was looking at EPs for Vanrober graphs not SD btw, so probably a few more turns on that as I'm assuming hes only spending on me (I know there is a way to figure that out but ??). I am only spending on him atm; adjusted my EPs before I even met Vanrober as SD is priority #1 to keep track of.

the way you figure out what he's spending is to open the espionage screen. The top number next to each leader would be your espionage, the bottom number would be the others.

I'm pretty sure that information is there in base - I've been using BUG for so long, I am not positive, but I'm pretty sure.

Couldn't find the espionage but required for graphs went up by 2 while I'm putting 4 in, so should have in about 3 turns.Someone has a high soldier count but still 1 pop. Based on starting techs and PBSPY score increases I don't think its BW? Any thoughts? Also no easy answer on the bottom silvers. Next report in 3 turns; should have the whole area. 2nd scout finishes next turn and will head north. There is a lion that keeps patrolling around there, but will keep to cover. Worker will start camping 2nd deer.
