Yeah you're right, sorry, that's an artifact of when we were offering a number up-front. Edited that fix into the draft.

I still think it's possible they're pulling one over on us, but especially now that speaker talked with one of them offline, it' currently seems like a sufficiently remote possibility and the potential gains are so high that some sort of modest gift is clearly positive EV.

Asking them what would be useful, plus perhaps noting that we are finishing a critical tech this turn and will be able to send a modest gift of gold on 153 so it doesn't look like we're just fishing for free info by stalling, sounds like the right course of action.

Lets suggest a number to start out with to keep them realistic. and send thsi soon. CFC is doing diplo as we speak.

I would change the tone of the Civ.Fr draft to be more friendly. "We are willing to" sounds like we're begrudgingly doing it. Of course, non-native speakers are receiving this, but still something like "We discussed it as a team, and we would definitely like to help you out. How much gold would you need? How about [insert lowball amount] to get started?"

How about instead of low balling them, we actually make them a reasonable offer, to try to actually earn their friendship? I know this is an alien concept at Realms Beyond, but we could turn over a new leaf...

Ok, reworked second paragraph again. I think the tone is better.

Draft to CivFr Wrote:Wow, that sounds like a very dirty trick by CFC. I'm sorry to hear that - they have been very difficult to us too. We are currently bound to a NAP with CFC until T175, and we are in the middle of our own war anyway as you might have seen.

However, we talked about it as a team and we'd be happy to help you guys out somehow. We are finishing an important tech at end of T152 that we cannot delay, but after that we could spare some gold. How much would be useful? Also, you can run the trade mission in one of our cities if you'd like. Unlike some, we are an honest team, so if you can make it that far we will not give you any trouble.

Maybe we can work together in the future - it seems to me that we may have common enemies. We do have full maps on CFC, so if you want, we could also exchange maps with you.

Thanks,

I think the main question is whether or not we offer a specific sum of gold or leave it open-ended. I think I'm slightly leaning towards going back to offering something specific.

preview-edit: Speaker, I see your post - what would you view as 1) a reasonable offer that wouldn't seriously slow us and 2) something that you would value if you were them. (this question is open to anyone really, just asking you since it seems from your comments you have an idea in your head that you haven't said)

I don't have any particular amount in mind. I just don't like the approach of "let's offer the absolute minimum and try to make them think we really want to help, when we don't." If we want a friend, I think we have to be one, and I don't think that starting low and negotiating will be the right approach. If we offer them something laughable, they will just go back to ignoring us like they did for the first 150 turns.

From WPC's diplomat regarding CivFr:

WPC Wrote:Hello Scooter,

I can reply regarding the CivFR.
This far we haven't had diplo contact with CivFR.

Location of their lands is known, but no contact.

Not important, but nice to know.
