The First Civ6 Lurker Thread

If they knew what they were doing they would babysit the final archduke city which would have severely hampered Sullla right there. As I said before there's a big difference getting into position to win and winning.

They couldn't. Neither teh nor yuris had any unit to stand a chance vs Sullas Legions. Rome is IMO OP. There is no contemporary counter to Legions.

If the map wasn't so cramped, Horsemen with their 4 move and ZOC-ignore could have done a decent job of concentrating attacks and taking legions out one by one.

It might not have been possible to stall Sullla, but it would have been worth a try. Maybe, as Sullla even stated himself, Rome is OP and ought to be banned from MPs.

Nah, one game is far too little data to deem a civ over-powered. Yeah, Rome clearly has an early edge, but so do other civs.

I think that question whether an civilization is overpowered also depends how it is used by human players.
In this game, there were not one but two Rome's: Sulla and TheArchduke.

If looking to TheArchduke's stats before he gets attacked by Sulla, he has roughly same score/stats as teh and Yuris.
In almost all category's TheArchduke was a little ahead teh and Yuris, except military score which was significantly lower than teh.
This was one of important reasons why TheArchduke was selected as target by Sulla, Sulla's other neighbor teh was cranking out archers and Yuris was safe due distance and terrain from Sulla.

Civilization 6 is still new game and this is first PBEM, I am sure that people are starting to make counter strategies when playing against human player Rome based on this PBEM.

Sumeria is rightfully banned due War Cart, a human player can rush with two of it and eliminate his neighbor by turn 25. And the opponent almost don't get chance to defend himself because warriors and slingers can't win against War Cart and opponent likely can't build walls due being in turn 25. There isn't counter strategy against War Carts when they arrive at your borders at turn 25, so it is too OP and unfair, therefore banned.

An option doesn't have to be unbeatably strong to still skew the game and ruin the metagame. If Rome can be beaten with the right countermeasures... that still constrains the viable field to either Rome or something that counters it, making for a very limited set of options.

No doubt that Rome is powerful, I don't deny that. But I think saying that Rome is over-powered on the basis of a single game is to draw conclusions on far too little data.

Sullla went into the game with a very clear game plan and with lots of preparations, both on the map, the game, and his chosen civilization. He planned out how to use the various advantages that Rome held and crafted an extremely well-executed surprise attack. Sullla needed not only legions, but a critical mass of them (four in the beginning) together with a great general. There were lots of moving parts in his offensive against Archduke, and different play from any of the other players could easily have put some dirt into the machine.

He continued to punish teh, who had failed to keep up in the military development. I think if teh had had three or four crossbows instead of a single one, that in itself would have made conquering Frankfurt much harder. Then teh probably lost his whole army by placing it far too much forward, making it much harder to recover.

We shall see whether Rome is strong if it is featured in PBEM2. (as a participant, I am not sure whether it will be selected so no spoilers here please).

Yuris has been hyping his knights to himself for ages, and thinking that they will give him a major advantage, while Sullla is casually one turn away. Going to be extremely painful watching that play out.
Surprise! Turns out I'm a girl!
