We added a couple more to the family this turn; we're now at an even dozen cities. The one that's actually a good city is Vancouver. Plains cottages are going to be a hallmark of Northeastern Canada. pat It's pretty okay! Commerce! Hammers! Not like food happens here anyway.

On the subject of no food: Halifax! Not even worth making a granary; this kid is just going to be pumping out military units until the end of all time. Might cap out at size six in the end, stealing the plains copper mine and the cow; that would net 20hpt, which is just lovely. I'm currently also hoping that darned spear attacks; if it moves NW I'll be peeved.

Nebby 'Cane' Ezer, "The Last Despot".

In the year 273 BC, the famous Hanging Gardens of Ottawa openned; the young First Canadian Nebby Ezer, called then "Cane" for his cruelty, built them for his new bride, a dusky Roman princess who it is said pined for the lush hills of her homeland. The Gardens were known as the seventh wonder of the world; their creation a marvel of ancient engineering and botany.

Visually impressive as the gardens were, they were only a small sign of the impressive despot's reign. He expanded the population of Canada through a totalitarian system of enforced citizenship; many of the marginal tribes around the Tau'ri people had coexisted peacefully for years within the Canadian wilderness; Ezer's army rounded up the marginal peoples and split tribes, foribly resettling them in the outer cities of Canada, while around his own demense of Ottawa the great forests were clear cut for miles as cottages and hamlets were settled.


Although most of the primitive tribes around the greater cities of Canada were fairly powerless to resist the forced assimilation, along the great south borders some of the tribes, more unified and supplied by the Vikings, rose to fight. Unlike the axe-wielding howling hordes of the past, these were disciplined, intense cohorts of spearmen armed and armored with Viking bronze.

Against these arrayed ranks of bronze the traditional chariots of Canada could do little, and the regulars of the army were deployed in bulk to the east. The task of thwarting the new model barbarians fell then to the archer-heavy militias of Lower Canada. In the southwest between the hills of Halifax and the peninsula of Montreal the veterans of Gore smashed the pillaging barbarian tribes, coolly dispatching them in a series of pitched battles along the trade roads.


But in the southeast outside of Regina it was a different story. The barbarians there, led by the half-Viking Leif Halfhand, declined making an attack against the fortified city, instead moving to pillage the gold mines in the dry hills along the coast. The rash Commander Krill tried to dislodge them, but failed miserably in an utter rout, forcing the remaining companies within the city to stay defensive.


As demographically influential as Nebby Ezer's tribal displacement was, however, what were even more important to the future of Canada were his massive and cruel abuses of power; sub-chiefs of the various cities grew increasingly restive, and the Tau'ri people grumbled. A new method of government was desperately needed; one where the rulers of Canada cared for the nation as if it were a family treasure, because it was one.
