Who would get it if we didn't take it? Does this gold go into the 'city capture' gold?
I don't think that our actions of refusing and then trying to get the other teams to agree to a blanket ban on this will work. However, if we accept this and set it aside for 'humanitarian' needs (and say as much) then turn around and gift it to someone else - that might carry some weight.
Who to gift it to? I would select the lowest score team that we are not at war with and gift it to them. I would even consider a gift to the Germans if we we are at peace.
Or we could split it 8 ways and gift it to everyone.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

City capture gold is independent from a civ's treasury.
I support not taking the gold.

yes, we don't need this money. And we don't need to bring this to discussion. If we don't get a decision (and I think we will not), then teams will be very comfortable in donating their money while dying...

It's about probabilities. What are the chances that if we take this 50 gold, we'll be able to prevent future gold gifts? 0%.
What are the chances that if we don't take this 50 gold, we'll be able to prevent future gold gifts? Something better than that. How much better if arguable, but even a 10 or 20% chance is totally worth 50 gold. Even if we prevent some but not all gold gifts, we come out ahead, because this is likely the first and last time in this game anyone will be inclined to offer us spite gold. Let's gamble that 50 gold on something worth much, much more.

Then again, are there enough people active on that board for a discussion if we don't participate?

I would send a note to the Spanish thanking them for the gift, but explaining why we don't think we should accept.
