Interesting... I would have taken the money given that we didn't ask for it and we did intend to help them and even go to war with CFC. However I understand the reason for not taking it and am fine with it. I would ask plako personally his opinion on the situation. If we don't take the money at least we should set a precedent of sorts to prevent this from happening.

Better to not put plako in the position of having to offer his opinion, I think. Let's politely decline, publicly inform of the offer and our subsequent decline. Once we have a feeling from other teams via their reply to our request, plako can give his opinion without being so far out on the limb or seeming to be working at our behest. Not that he would, but some teams (cough CFC cough) may try to spin it that way should plako ever be in a position to rule in our favor in some future dispute.

Well, if we going the all out political correctness route here, you want to inform the Spaniards before posting anything public. They might not agree with dragging this to the open.

My preferred position would be to accept it, divide it by 8 and send each team their share. It is balanced, fair and sets an positive example for all other teams to take in the future.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

BGN: you make a very good point.

We should send a big thank you to the Spanish team for their maps. From C&D I can tell they gave us visibility on no less than 23 cities. We have 74 earlier, so it's an increase with 30%. Most importantly, we now should have excellent visibility on CivFr's cities.
Furthermore, I consider that forum views should be fluid in width

Should we decline the map offer as they are only offering it since they are dying?

It was a map swap - the gold is a one-sided gift.

Note: I've just created a loophole. CFC: "we'll sell InsertDyingCivHere our map for all their gold"

That's not even remotely the same thing.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.
