Oh thank god. Signs of life.

Kuro - you are confusing "having a strong running game" with "was leading in almost every game and therefore did a lot of running late in games to kill the clock." None of those teams you cited drafted RBs in the top 5 of the draft. You seriously said "...but an elite running game led by Corey Dillon was key" - just LOL. If he was so important, why didn't the team nosedive after that year since he never had another 1,000 yard rushing year in his career after 2004? He wasn't important at all. NE has remained successful for a decade, and literally the only player who has been on every one of those teams was Tom Brady. The only NE team to miss the playoffs in that stretch was a team that didn't have Tom Brady. How many different RBs have they used during that time? Over a dozen. One year Sammy Morris (!) led the team in rushing which is just hilarious.
RB is not an important position to pay for.
To illustrate what I mean... Here's a rough stab at the top 6 QBs and top 6 RBs based on their seasons last year. Okay I threw Brees on as 6th despite the fact that he had one iffy year because of a bunch of killer years. Then I just grabbed the top 6 in rushing yards. Here they were:
Brady Rodgers Peyton Manning Flacco Ryan Brees AP Alfred Morris Marshawn Lynch Jamaal Charles Doug Martin Arian Foster If any of the 6 teams that possess a QB on that first list was offered their QB for any RB on that second list, they would reject it. None of those teams would give up their QB for Adrian Peterson. They all can win without AP or an equivalent RB, while the Vikings have been nothing but mediocre since forever despite having AP. RBs just aren't important because having a great one doesn't mean that much more than having a good one. Another prediction: in 3 years, at least 4 of those RBs won't be putting up pro bowl numbers anymore. Don't believe me? Look at this: http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player.../year/2009 That's 3 years ago! Exactly 1 of the top 10 from 2009 was in the top 10 in 2012. That's brutal. I can't think of a position with worse turnover than that. |
