Quite honestly, I half-expected STADIUM to be grey; if this had been to win or we'd had other missing words to fill in, I would have been happy with WASHINGTON first.

Well - that`s an ambitious clue. We`ve got a lot of options here.

A surgeon with a KNIFE can cut an ARM and an EYE on a PLATE. I feel relatively good about those four.

------------------------

CELL is also related to hospitals.
DISEASEs can lead to autopsies.
Autopsies can perhaps be done in a LAB.
After an operation with narkosis you WAKE up.
Can you do an autopsy on e.g a dog? Hence TAIL. Or perhaps even MOUSE?

---------------------

I`d probably go KNIFE- PLATE - ARM - EYE - CELL - DISEASE in that order.

An autopsy is held to determine what DISEASE a person held.
It's performed in a LAB ...
... with incisions done by a KNIFE.
You want to determine the ROOT cause of death.
You might examine body parts like an EYE or an ARM.  (Not strong, since these usually don't have anything to do with death.)
You might want to look at CELLs as well.

There are further arguable links but they're tenuous compared to the above:
  • DIAMOND (used to polish things in a lab)
  • GENIUS (some coroners are smart ... though some are elected ...)
  • PLATE (describes some biological flat things)
  • POINT (to a cause of death)
  • WAKE (may be held around an autopsy).

I've got a lot of ideas that i don't feel good about

DIAMONDs - found in the ground
BRIDGE - connects to points of land (ground)
HORSESHOE - the part attached to a horse that touches the ground
PLATE - a metal plate used for grounding electricity?
MOUSE - perhaps for being a small animal close to the ground?

Probably in that order
