Got another scout out of a hut and found the top of the map:

I think I'm going to put city #2 in the best spot next and put it between the Sheep & Wheat in the northeast.  There's another spot to be had by the cow & wheat, right bout where Krill's scout is.  With all this snow and tundra in the north I might want to build the Great Wall.

It dawns on me that I've gotten exactly what I asked for in the tech thread:  Great Plains script with the green cut out.

I think the settling order goes 1) Copper, 2) Sheep+Wheat, 3) Cow+Wheat

Then we chop out an axe army and go after Krill?

Krill opened Pottery ... and Mysticism?

I forgot to tell Mjmd one key detail last turn: I forgot to tell him to revolt to Slavery.

And then I magnified the mistake this turn by founding Staunton this turn instead of waiting a turn:

So the plan here is to improve the Copper first (t36) and slow build a monument off of that (t39), then build a worker (t48) while we wait for borders to pop. Now when I realized that I forgot to instruct Mjmd to revolt into Slavery that inadvertantly pushed all those numbers back a turn, which means that I finish with 3h overflow on the monument. This in turn made me realize that I could delay hooking up the Copper by a turn to t37 and still get the monument done eot39. Which in turn made me realize that I can finish the road to connect Staunton next turn instead of starting the Copper, and gain some trade route income.

And finally that made me realize that if I had delayed settling Staunton until next turn then I could have built the road first and then settled the city to get the 2c extra from getting a trade route straight away. It's still possible somebody else will plant a city later this turn or next turn and I'll still get the connection, but this was a more surefire option if I had just taken some time to plan it out.

With the vacation and now coming home exhausted, planning is something I have decidedly not done much any of lately. However, I have a general idea of what I want to do: I want to grow to get another warrior out and start a new settler to settle double food in my northeast. I'm likely going to have that city in the marked spot, which means it will also need to pop borders before it can improve its food - I just hate that I wlil be taking so much tundra/snow if I plant to grab the food first-ring. This is probably wrong by me, but I can't help this one.

I really do need to come up with some kind of plan...

If this is wrong then I don't want to be right:

Should be able to get pre-t100 Samurai even if we run a single specialist for it. Getting all that gold from huts is going to help.

As for my immediate plans, it's to 1p whip out the settler, and then the overflow combined with a chop will get a granary in the barracks. Then we chop out granaries for the other cities - though it's still likely monument first in the next city as well.

I don't know if I'll go for many more cities than what I have along the river. Probably something in the south, if I can find anything down there that looks like a commerce-gain. But teching Metal Casting is going to be the bottleneck.

This changes things ... or does it?

That's a lot of green. Do I make eastward expansion my priority now? I think Thoth came from that direction - but then again I saw Thoth in a war with Krill (eh, could have just been scout wars). Really it matters if there is anyone to the south of that.

But that's a lot of riverside green tiles.

Whipped settler for city #3 and then added a chop on top so I can 1-turn a granary after.

Thoth definitely knows about Paradise.

I ducked my scout away and stayed out of sight. Better to not let him know that I know that he knows that I know. Or something like that.

In the west my other scout is healing after a bear took it down to 0.1. Bing stumbled on us, so we're starting EP spending on him.

And I settled Steinitz in the tundra after all. Just better for the growth curve.

Workers being built in Morphy and Staunton. Need to get all the bonus resources improved and then start laying cottages.

I like settling for two first ring foods. I did not like it when you had it it dot mapped 1S.

Yeah, it's the right spot. Part of me just hates seeing all those "wasted" tiles in the north (that I'll never grow large enough to work anyway), which is why I entertained the other location for so long.

3 days, 9 turns. At this rate we'll have Metal Casting by Friday.

2-pop whipped my 4th worker out of the capital this turn. The next whip there will likely be the forge, but I haven't ruled out chopping it out. Right now I'm trying to lay some cottages down on my riverside tiles.

The plan is basically this:

t54-63: build up and prepare for forges as Metal Casting finishes. No new cities in this time
t64-65: chop/whip forge
t66-99: run engineer specialist. Expand out to 5-6 cities. Prepare those cities for Samurai rush: granary, barracks, maybe forge.
t100: bulb Machinery and start whipping
