If you're micromanaging tiles to make that happen, that actually might be slightly inefficient. You're (undesirably) maximizing the time that accumulated food and production dwell in the boxes before getting used. If you have the tiles available, it's better to complete either the growth or production item ASAP then switch to the other, so you would have the pop or stone works producing for an extra turn or two.

That's a good point and I would do well to remember it. In this case I don't think it makes a difference, I just changed one tile for extra hammers and chopped a forest smile

We met Almaty Yerevan one turn before destroying the barb camp. No quests yet frown
With so many barbs around I will just destroy the camp, it's not worth waiting.

I also found an exploit. Well, it's kinda like C&D in Civ4, finding information you shouldn't have.
Under the "declare war on" choice in diplomacy window you can actually find out what city states are in the game before ever meeting them.

Stone works finished. Working some good tiles now and getting out a settler in just 3 turns.
I could 10T build the Stonehenge to catch up in religion, but I think the settler and other units are more important.

Cleared the western barb camp, about to clear the northern next turn if all goes well.
Starting to build roads. They only take 1T to build with my +50% worker improvement speed. Roads outside your territory don't cost maintenance, so connecting my cities should actually make a profit.

Cleared northern camp! Two down, two to go. Also found a new luxury resource: furs.
I finished Writing tech this turn. Requesting an embassy exchange from Jkaen.
Might be a good idea to go for The Great Library, only takes 8T in Vienna. Let's see if it's still up for grabs in two turns.

Was this a change in BNW? In vanilla and G&K, roads outside borders cost maintenance for whoever built them.

Hmm, patch notes say nothing about it. I might be wrong here, will check next turn when I build a road. I definitely remember MadDjinn (Civ5 deity player who streams and makes videos) saying this at one point.

Yeah you were right, roads outside your borders still cost you money. The exception is that roads you build inside city state borders are free, so that's probably where my mix up comes from. One of the CS quests is to connect their city to your capital. I'm still going to use the same road layout I had planned of course, it's the shortest road network to connect the three cities.

Jkaen accepted the embassy exchange:

I finished the shrine in Salzburg and started on a Caravan. It was a mistake, and I'm noting it here to remind myself to switch out. Caravans are completely useless right now, there's no-one to trade with, and I don't really need extra food for my cities. A cargo boat from the third city on the other hand will be a priority, though I might need a trireme to clear out the barbarian navy first.

Settler finished in Vienna, started another one. Great Library is off the table, Jkaen got it. Next three cities to be settled are: Truffles city, furs city, dyes city. Gotta keep my workers busy, so I don't mind building two settlers in a row. I changed Salzburg's Caravan build to a Chariot Archer instead. Salzburg is now connected to the capital, but it won't kick in until next turn. I have an extra cotton that I can hopefully trade away to Azza or Meiz at some point, but first I have to find Meiz. I will post an update on my scout next time I play a turn, he's still alive and doing a good job uncovering the map.

I should also scout closer to home. We are playing with 10 city states, there has to be more than one near me.

Today I learned how city connections work. It takes 7 roads to connect Salzburg and the third city to Vienna. So the cities need to have a total pop of 7 before we make a profit. That said, I reckon the extra mobility offered by the roads makes it worth it to build them even when losing some gold. I'll double-check when I settle the third city next turn, but this is how it should work lol

Scout progress. I think Azza has one of the faith-based natural wonders north of his second city.

This isn't new in BNW, right? That's the same trade route mechanic that always existed in Civ 5.

Yeah, road building doesn't always synch perfectly with profitability. Worker labor is a tighter constraint than gaining or losing a couple pennies, so you build the roads when the workers are available.

Probably not new to BNW, just new to me :P I had known about the mechanic, but I had never looked into how the numbers are actually calculated.
