Got a new turn in this morning.
Little river valley up north. Plenty of food up here, but nothing incredible just yet. I'll cross the river next turn (NE), and then I'll likely move onto the forested hill after that to see if I spy anything useful.
Civ6 tile picker: I hate you so much. I'm guessing the algorithm prefers luxuries over bonus resources, but I really wish it was smart enough to consider that raw yields early are most important. Everyone else did settle on T2, so everyone's settled their capital. I missed the screenshot of this, but I did notice that two of us had 1 more point than the other two players. That extra point was from era score.
Interesting. So we can conclude that 2 people are not settled next to a floodplains? We already kinda figured out the starts were not mirrored, but now it seems pretty likely that our starts are quite different. That makes me even more happy with this very strong capital. Maybe this'll help make up for being dead last in the turn order.

The tile picker has a decent chance of flipping back and forth between the deer and silks tile. Which one will it choose? No one knows! What a great mechanic used by Civ5 and Civ6.
Honestly though, it's probably better to pick the silks tile first because +1 culture is a huge deal when your whole civ is making 1.3 culture/turn. That tile will markedly speed your progress towards Code of Laws, and therefore towards your pantheon choice as well. The culture on the silks tile would also speed you faster towards acquiring the next tile via cultural expansion, so getting the silks tile first would also speed up getting the deer tile second. This also lets you avoid spending gold on tile purchases and spend it on something better instead. An early builder purchase for China can be a really strong option and it's something to thing about in the upcoming turns. I've also always loved the monument purchase in the second city, both for the empire-wide culture and to speed up tile acquisition at that city. Looking forward to seeing what else is sitting in your local neighborhood.

The tile picker gives a higher weight to luxury and strategic resources than bonus resources, IIRC. It will also weight 2nd ring tiles adjacent to 3rd ring lux/strat than other 2nd ring tiles in most cases.

Thanks, suboptimal. That makes sense. Although like Sullla noted, I've seen it change its mind over and over again too, so there's definitely some shenanigans in the algorithm somewhere.

Oh that's right, good call. Of course, now that you've made me no longer annoyed at silks first, we're absolutely going to get the deer first somehow. We're also dead last in the turn order, so maybe getting to God King a bit sooner will let us jump the Pantheon line a bit too rather than waiting for last choice. I'm assuming they never fixed the issue where only one Pantheon can be founded per turn, right?

New turn, and uh, about that tile picker conversation…
Just flip a coin at this point. We’ll make it work one way or another.
Nothing new found here. Checked settler view, and didn’t see anything unusual either. Probably going to move NE onto the forested hill next turn unless anyone feels strongly about NW. Based on what I see there, I may circle around clockwise or continue north a bit more.

I don't know the exact formula, but it counts all yields equally ... most of the time. So it should flip between the deer and silk since they both have 5 yields. And i would bet it ends up on the silk, going by number of turns remaining.

Even being last to a pantheon won't be too bad. Since Goddess of the Harvest is gone there aren't very many "gotta haves". Any of the culture or faith generating pantheons are solid choices - Earth Goddess is a decent poor man's GOTH, Oral Tradition will boost our silk plantations with more culture, but as China you can also take Monument to the Gods to go all-in on wonder-whoring, which no one else will want. So even if we're dead last there should be something available.

Turn 4
Slight change of plans…
I was welcomed by this barbarian scout that appears to have come from the desert. Actually, as I type this, I’m zooming in on the unit, and he appears to be facing south. Does that mean he actually came from north? I’m pretty sure Civ6 maintains unit direction in this situation.
Either way I could only move 2 tiles, so I redirected my warrior to wedge himself between the scout and whatever direction he goes. I’m hoping I can prevent him from getting back to wherever his camp is located. That would be super helpful by sparing me some early barbarian pressure. He still hasn’t seen my border yet, so I think I can either chase him away or trap and kill him if he advances further towards my capital.
TILEWATCH: still on the deer this turn.

Another barbarian scout, yeeesh. Two of them in the first 5 turns. Feels like that’s pretty unlucky. I’m still shadowing that scout in the north, we’ll see what comes of that. I’m not really sure how barbarian scout AI works.
I thought about working two 1/3 tiles in order to speed this warrior, but I stuck on the rice. We do want to keep growing because we have good tiles to grow onto, so we should be fine to continue this way.
One PBEM question - I’ve set a password for my turn, but a couple times it seemingly gets “un-set,” and I open my save and have no password prompt. Is this a bug or something with the way PBEM works in Civ6? It’s not a huge deal. I trust Alhambram to not open my save, but it’s still odd. Any idea?

I can't answer that, I'm afraid - I've never had a password set for my turn. I just had PYDT linked to my Steam account and it logged me in automatically when I loaded the save.
