[SPOILERS - PBEM17] novice and spaceman - Suryavarman of India

Hey man, just back now.

Thanks for all the comments, lurkers. I had good old chew on this over the last day or so. Luckily I was distracted by a wedding so I did forget about it for several hours.

Needless to say I was most annoyed about the breaking of agreements - that we would be turned on at some point is not at all surprising - just the timing.

My verdict wavered, but was leaning towards giving this one up, purely because what's the point if anything people say is just lies. But yeah, I guess Always War is the way to go. I did think our chariots might stand a chance of razing Bursa (or whatever it's called). We can hunt down rego's workboat and possibly raze darrell's coastal city.

The only thing about no settling abroad is that it would really help our trade routes since at the moment we only have one intercontinental route. Makes me feel bad that I didn't use that settler abroad like you planned.

I also feel bad that I cost us the Great Merchant - could have kept it on the galley...
And on the sixth day, god created Manchester.

I cant see how you could feel bad for 'wasting' the GM, as far as I am aware nothing like this has happened at RB before, so I would have assumed the agreement was solid too

I don't want to start cutting deals with some of the players to get back at others, in my eyes they all share the reponsibility for the stab. In practice us going AW may favour Rego as he's farthest away from us, but that's how it goes. The other players can only thank themselves for that. Of course, us going AW may end up favouring Darrell and Shoot the Moon as well, as they could conquer us.

AW sounds good. They share responsibility but in my mind Shoot & darrell are the worst offenders, rego the least, Kyan somewhere in between.

Guilt offerings from darrell:

Quote:Okay, I am glad you did not play the turn yet. First off, I would like to apologize for what happened. I held off apologizing because it would be quite empty if there were no in game actions to follow up. So, please offer me a cease fire this turn. I will accept on my turn and offer you Thailand. You can then accept that offer and re-declare war on me. It doesn't make up for breaking the deal but at least its something.

Darrell

Yeah, let him stew in his own guilt.

I'll play the turn then, and mobilize?

We can always see about settling offshore, I'd like to try to get a feel for our security situation first, though. Little point in settling something we can't defend.
I have to run.

Oh, and here's a chat with Kyan on the night before The Stab:

Quote:20:23 Kyan: hey, only got a moment, but wanted to pop you guys a quick note to say thank you for not disclosing my HG plans
20:24 me: no problem
we did promise
so you landed them?
Kyan: indeed and its important to me that you kept it
yup 11 cities
me: not bad, congratulations!
20:25 looking forward to see your crop yield next turn
Kyan: thanks, and without the famed novice micro. you chaps would probly have landed a 21 city HG had you planned it hehe
~135 at the moment
give it a few turns
as i'll be whipping ~4 workboats next turn
20:26 really wish i had pyramids now though. Crop yield vs gnp battle- that would have helped me a lot
got to shoot, but again, cheers. smile have a great bank holiday weekend

Well gosh, glad that us keeping our word means a lot to you, Kyan! wink

I also see from our logs that spaceman had a long and amicable (mostly off topic) chat with Kyan a few hours later. Oh well.

Yes, in which he offered an NAP that I said I was happy with but would check with you. Little did I know.

Everyone was online that evening, hence the save whizzed round, so whilst I was chatting with most of them, they were plotting our downfall. Extra nice, huh.

Well, yes, I am perhaps harshly judging myself in hindsight, but I was also a little naive. Speaker and Sullla wouldn't have played it that way, for example, because of MP experience and general lack of trust.

Highlights of the chats from that fateful evening...

With rego:

Quote:23:17 Dan: ok let's see how fast we can get this turn around

With Kyan:

Kyan: i have a question for you and novice
i would rather LP not have to deal with a war dec whilst i am away
me: ok, pbem17 talk
Kyan: would you be interested in a NAP to cover until i am back at least?
me: yeah that sounds good to me
i wouldn't want to exploit a situation anyway
Kyan: im away 5th-19th
me: and whilst no-one is in any position to war
23:54 Kyan: so its 3 weeks til im back, ~21 turns
me: we're not looking to buiild an army for nothing
Kyan: yeah exactly
so maybe a NAP to turn 90?
or 85 if you want it shorter? or whatever really
me: either sounds fine to me
but you know what i will say next
Kyan: oh?
23:55 me: or maybe not
i will speak to novice
Kyan: it's late tongue
ah, yeah
that was obvious
dammit
me: ha
i gave you a chance
Kyan: indeed frown
yeah, no need to get back to me now
dont go til sunday

With Shoot:

00:18 me: yeah
00:19 ok pytheas has landed on your land, NW of bursa
Shoot: ok, perfect
me: are you settling N of the wines shortly?
Shoot: that's the rough plan
me: we have a poor location 2SW of the wines which is the only way to grab the clams tehre
00:20 it will be a later filler
but just thought i would let you know
Shoot: I'll probably do the more northern spot first (2S of the top clams) to ward off Kyan's expansionistic tendencies
me: heh, yeah
Shoot: you and your cultural...lovely
00:21 me: his crop yield is sky high - wonder what his maintenance is like
yeah, but late settle means you should be fine
it won't be for the next 10-20 turns at least, i wouldn't have thought
maybe 30
sorry 20
00:22 Shoot: ok, that's fine
me: and it's not going to steal your first ring, so doesn;t actually grab that much
Shoot: I have another settler coming out in 4t (after two in route right now, haha) so that should be settled soon enough
yeah, just a couple grassland
me: just one
