[PB25-SPOILERS] The Lunacy of the Reign of HAK Continues

So something big is about to happen....hopefully not towards me. Commodore just whipped 5 times this turn, and also during his turn had a 18pt score jump (obviously from a bulb) and he adopted Vassalage.
I do see last turn retep whipped 4 times. Not sure if that's him expecting Commodore to be attacking him. Hopefully that is the case. And hopefully retep whipping out some defenders doesn't change what might have been Commodore's target.

Anyway, quick update from me as I'm just a wee bit tired after 8hrs of driving and being up since very early this morning.

Hotel network was so bad it was slow just changing a tile in the city screen. So luckily I didn't have many changes for this turn. Hopefully the resort network will be better.
Anyway, for now just need to cross out fingers that Commodore has his eyes on retep. Since it looks like he'll be ready for attacking someone any turn now.

Just enough time this morning to post these:

Time to run down for breakfast and then hit the road for another 6hrs or so.

So the network here at the resort still isn't all that great, but is at least better than the hotel. Logged in to look around and check the speed and such, and it seems to function well enough.
Anyway, noticed something while moving around the map...Joey had a Mine on Grassland. So decided to check around the rest of the map a little bit.....

Joey has Grassland Iron at his city on our continent. His other Iron is 1S of Trouble Nation.

Grimace has Iron mined on the hill 1E of his capital Motley Crue.

And Commodore has Iron on the mined hill 1NE of Cobra. Though looks like he still has to put a road there.

I did not see any suspicious mines anywhere else on the map. So either some of the other people don't have IW yet, or I just didn't notice where the iron might be.

So I only just realized last turn retep canceled the Open Borders we had. He kept it going with both Grimace & Gavagai. So this turn I sent him another request for it with offering him 3gpt for it. If he still declines, I guess I'll try a higher gpt.

The golden ages have ended for GJ & Commodore.
Next turn we get our great person.

96% Great Merchant odds (I assume those odds actually increase with these last few merchant points that get added to the pool at the end of this turn?) so if that is what comes, I suppose we'll bulb MC.

T MINUS 9 TURNS,....are we still only at 2 spears in Hungry? Unless I'm missing something that's really, really, really not going to cut it.

Spears! Spears! Spears! We need to plant 4-6 more in the next 9 turns and ideally in the next 4T to get full fortify bonus. I think that I'm going to have to insist on a round of spear whips (1H into the build first of course) to get us back on track.

We've opened up a big score gap between us and Grimace and caught up to Retep (or he's whipped his score away) so that should help to deflect away from us,...but we're the bottom power of MC's 3 neighbours. [noted that you've invested in military builds that haven't completed]. With a lot fewer cities than us, Grimace must be really gunning it. Presumably this is because he doesn't want to be eaten, but nevertheless warrants watching.

Not at all surprised. I don't think that you realized what a big favour that he did. We'll have to buy his OB now if he'll even bite.

Part of the problem is that you've risen so high on the scoreboard (well relatively anyway). That, or the non-gift to Retep may have induced him to cancel borders. It's ok to give OB to a weakling, but not to a contender. And strangely for a guy that didn't know the mechanics of the whip until 10/15Ts ago you appear to have a non-zero chance at winning this game.

I might be enormously jumping the gun here. But,...Day's PB18 knights attack targetted Whosit. Whosit had been previously engaged and was depleted, and his army was out of position, and he was defending with archers vs Knights. Then Dtay hit CH,...same thing but against Zulu impi but to no material difference due to overwhelming power and mobility. Master Commodore does not have any such opponents and he could easily be headed for a decline as he gains far less from an empire-wide whip down thatn Dtay did.

If that happens, it's a much more even playing field with a reduced MC, GJ and *you* as the 3 civs with the best chance. BUT NONE OF THIS WILL MATTER IF WE DON'T REINFORCE OUR CHOKEPOINT WITH SPEARS!!!

Next, (once the 6-8 spears are in Hungry) we need to start on Phase II. Our Phase II ToDo list.

1. Score management. To have any chance of getting OB we need to play the fool here (I'm not playing :LOLsmile. Score is calculated from Wonders, land and tech. So:
-Favour saving gold over landing tech (unless there's an obvious benefit like COL)
-Reduce score through whips into either army or buildings
-Hold the GP but don't GA or bulb. [EDIT: If MC is carefully contemplating who to attack, well he'll note that you popped a GP and that will factor in as a deterrant. In other words, better to have a backpocket GP for GA than to bulb MC right now]
-Do not pass Retep in score.
-Obviously, we do not want score so depleted that we're more tempting than Grimace.

If we can negotiate OB make sure that the trade partner receives a gpt gift. That way cancelling OB hurts them and they're less likely to do so. Standard prisoner's dilemna,...If I'm gaining 5 gpt from you and I cancel and you turn around and land OB with someone else,...I'm strictly down 5gpt for no reason. Shop around for a good gpt price accepting that you're going to have to pay something. The people lowest on the scoreboard have less incentive to deny you than the contenders do.

The one person who's most likely to give you OB,....Master Commodore. He's unlikely to have OB with anyone else. Deal with the devil and all that. But if we can't get OB anywhere else well that's a win-win for us two relative to the rest of the world.

2. If the wratch of MC passes onto another then we start planning for our 3-city grab from Borsche. If Borsche has NOT grabbed that southern site, then we should make that a very high priority. He's taken some power dips so will be uninclined to do anything if we beat him to that location. If we have that city site a 1-mover stack will be very effective and we don't have to use 2-movers necessarily.

3. With no OB,...well the second island plant will have to take priority. We'll gain +1 cpt for every waterside city.

4. Once Borsche is removed and the southern island fully planted,...we'll it'll be time to turn our attention onto GJ's corn stealing plant. We'd want our UU and/or LBs in our Battle Island plant before we make that kind of move. Cake and eat it too.

See above. We probably want to delay this. Thing about the GP for a later GA. Bulb if we really need Triemes to protect our island.

Don't have a whole lot of time to respond to everything you wrote, but I did read it earlier today from my phone. Will review it again later.
But in the meantime, he's the current turn update:

Does this next one make you have a happier day? All the Spearman builds? smile

Also, I had sent my galley up north to take a quick peak....

And it ran smack dab into a Trireme belonging to Commodore. It moved right back into my own borders (back 1S of what the screenshot shows), but if Comm decides to take advantage of the situation he can easily declare war next turn and kill the galley. Nothing I can do about it. And if he does so, and offers Peace after killing it....well, I'm going to certainly accept that. Since for one, I can't do anything to retaliate....and for another...that'd get us 10 turns of peace to give us some peace of mind to finish other plans for the next 10 turns at least.

Oh, and I got my OB back with retep....probably over-paying for it, but I didn't feel like negotiating further right now....he asked me to pay 10gpt for it. I did count up my trade routes after accepting and I believe I'm getting exactly as much gold incoming from him as I have outgoing. So for now, it's net no effect, but would hopefully get better as my cities grow a bit more. If not, then I'll just cancel it in 10 turns for no actual detriment for myself. Just no decent gain. I just didn't have the time to really think about the details of it or really plan it out. If I weren't on vacation right now, I'd probably have declined it and maybe reoffered 7gpt or something like that back to him. Or at least gone over the gain/loss of such an agreemnet with you. But whatever. Not a huge deal in my opinion. Until we research Alpha (or someone else does), we don't really have much in the way of options. He's still the only one to research it.

As a quick FYI, that 2nd island plant is happening next turn. I just dropped off the settler this turn. And the work boat for those crabs will get there in 2 turns.

About to have a phone interview so only posting screenshots. Will post more later:

As you can see, got an interesting diplo window from Elkad. Not entirely sure what it means. That city of his is right on his border with Commodore on his landmass. I'll grab a screenshot of it's location later. Forgot to grab that one for showing you what that land looks like.

Whoa nelly! That looks like more than our 6-8 spear defense.

I was happy with the 7 that I believed that I saw earlier. How many are you building? If we're on target for 6-8 I think that it's time to switch to offense (cats/WE/HA)

Good luck on the interview!

Hmm. Well Elkad looks to have reason against both GJ and MC.

We sent a message to either Elkad and/or Donnovan before we DOW'd on GJ right?

You could reoffer many of his cities in exchange for Grumpy (too bad you have Anxious rather than Cautious) as an attempt to clarify. [I always wondered what would happen if someone hit ACCEPT]. Not really sure how he could respond to us or whether it's considered ethical. On the ethical note, I've seen some stuff from both Mackoti and Seven that attempt to convey messages and I think that it's generally permitted solely because it's so easy to misinterpret.

Probably he's intending Master Commodore as his target. I wonder if he realizes exactly how suicidal that is. He'll be dead in 20T if he attempts that and not from Master Commodore but probably from GJ.

If he's taking a shot at GJ,...well that's something that we could think about. But 5T is really soon regardless. With those spears in place we should have some options.
