[PB63 Cornflakes] Boudicca hunts crocodiles along the Nile

You still get the anarchy, at least in SP.

The Pyramids were built in a far away land! Word has spread that the Romans have built them. This could be a pivotal moment for Ginger. I've mentioned before that he is at risk of stagnating research-wise and never getting out of the classical era. But as SPI/PHI this could be his ticket forward ... if he was able to reach writing for Libraries mischief

In other foreign news MJMD is up to 11 cities! At least 3 of those are islands due to IC trade routes. I will have graphs on MJMD next turn and I'm really curious to see how he lines up on the GNP graph, as ORG/CHA.

It's T84 and I cannot believe that Oracle is still available! MJMD founded Buddhism at least 30 turns ago (confirmed to be MJMD through the culture graph). I can earn back half of the Meditation > Priesthood cost in prerequisite bonuses towards Code of Laws, and I could 1-turn build Oracle in 4 turns. I would be able to take Machinery for 1000 beakers, and if I miss the coinflip the hammers can be directed into the Forge and overflow into Colossus (I know, I know, overflow from Forge is less efficient ... but it's not negative, it just gives up the forge bonus on those hammers). Another negative is that I would have to chop my Deer tile to 1-turn build frown For 1000 beakers I'll give up 1 hpt. If I lose a coin flip that would be a sad day.

But again, 4 turns is a long time and I expect Oracle to fall any turn.

MJMD completed Oracle 2 turns ahead of me, on the same turn I researched Meditation. I almost had a chance to snag it. Now I wonder what he took … metal casting? Code of Laws (he’s ORG)? Currency?

Why does Mr. Cairo have 3 galleys on the water? He doesn't have any island cities as far as I can tell, and doesn't have a power spike for units on these ships. I did however see a chariot near the coast last turn that has since disappeared and is presumably now loaded. So it's possible he could be planning a conquest against MJMD's Fur island. How prophetic that the city named RollOldChariot might get rolled by a chariot in the next turn or two lol

Sorry for the lapse in reporting, especially during the GA frown I got very busy over the past couple weeks.

MJMD beat me to Colossus by 2 turns frown he almost certainly took Metal Casting with Oracle, and likely beat me due to his ability to whip. So put that into the win category for the slavery strategy. However I did end up with 130 failgold that is allowing me to run 100% research in the GA with less wealth building. Actually I invested 100 of that gold into a loan to Ginger for 20% interest, since the payback timeline pretty much coincided with my GA duration when I was planning to run a couple wealth builds anyway.  I'm making enemies in other directions and I don't mind boosting Ginger a little bit to keep a friend in that direction.

GA demos jive GNP is inflated with about 30 gpt wealth this turn, mostly because Jack has a galley near my fur island and I want to make sure I maintain enough gold on hand to upgrade my warrior into a spear next turn if needed. I'll reduce the wealth builds starting next turn. Note that Superdeath launched a GA the turn after me.

Over the last 5 turns I have founded 3 cities, spiking from 5 up to 8. Due to Currency all these cities have been net neutral commerce-wise. I am contemplating a swap into Slavery at the end of the GA in order to whip out infrastructure at these new cities. I don't see any down side to that. I can have granaries set up as the first whips, and follow with other items including forges, Confucian missionaries (for Organized Religion), Courthouses, etc. After maybe 15 turns of Slavery I can launch another GA back to either Caste System or Serfdom and grow everything up to the happy cap of 11-12.

In the Cairo/MJMD war, I'm not exactly sure what Mr. Cairo achieved for himself. He apparently razed 3 island cities rather than capturing. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled that the most threatening rival (with both Colossus AND Great Lighthouse) suffered a major setback through the loss of 3 island cities. But Mr. Cairo didn't gain anything, other than clearing some territory but he still has to build the settlers.

Memphis has celebrated “We Love the Despot Day” 4 out of the last 15 or so turns, in two different 2-turn periods. I saved about 5gpt each turn so that’s nice. But what triggers that celebration? The city has been at the happy cap the whole time and I would have thought a large happy surplus would trigger that type of celebration. Anyone know how this mechanic works?

Are you planning to expand much more in the near future, or stick with this number of cities for a while?

Thanks! And interesting, 15 turns ago is about when Memphis grew to size 8 making it eligible. And since that time it's rolled <1% 4 times in 15 turns! Also interesting to note that this is an additional benefit of a growth strategy vs. wide sprawling strategy. With 4 cities over the limit I have about 4% odds per turn of a city celebrating ... actually that's only worth about .25 gpt rolf

Basically my plan has been to front-load the GNP growth in the early turns while researching up to Currency, after which point the next round of new cities would be net positive to the research rate (my current state). In these early turns I settled commerce-heavy sites along the rivers and built as many cottages as I could along the banks of these rivers.

My focus for the next 25 turns will be on growing my production base, while surfing the GNP wave to the next generation of military. My newest city in the west will be a Mine/Farm/Workshop center. There are 2 additional cities that I have pinned in the east. Due to the poor food situation and abundance of forests in the area I'm looking to make these mass-lumbermill sites. The tradeoff is giving up the 30 hammer chops for a food neutral tile with 2 hpt + 1 commerce. Alternatively I could work farm + workshop for 4 hpt with Guilds + Caste System ... Chemistry would boost the workshops ahead. But I can always save those chops for a later wonder and workshop at that time. Partly I just want to test workshops and see if they can be even remotely competitive.

After founding those next 2 new cities and growing/developing all 5 new cities, I'll likely turn to expansion via the sword. I will be spreading Confucianism around to take advantage of Organized Religion for my upcoming infrastructure push, and will pick up Theocracy/Vassalage for 3-promo knights, 7 XP maces (1 combat from CR3, or a GG to sprinkle XP to a bunch of units), and 4 XP 2-promo ships. I'll use the whip for an infrastructure push in my small newly founded cities, but I'm planning to use mostly natural production for unit construction. To this end, my new cities will be focused on Farms/Mines/Lumbermills for improvements.

I'm really REALLY looking forward to reviewing Charriu's statistics after this game to see how my strategy compares to everyone else's traditional whop economy. I'm also looking forward to bashing some heads with Boudicca later in the game hammer
