What about instructions for the mapmaker (and finding one)? My suggestion would be:
- all players on the same continent
- enough islands for the ocean to be meaninzgful
- no crazy stuff (such as pre-placed improvements, cities or units)
- flat or cylindrical wrap
- moderate amount of resources, not lush
- balanced starts, but moderately assymetric (different resources, different shapes)

I know the last one is a lot to ask, requires more effort from the mapmaker. I'm not married to any of these ideas, so go ahead and present your own or shoot mine down as you please smile

don't know if its practially viable but i thought of what prehaps could be an interesting toroid Map script

a belt of Tundra/Ice connecting every player by land, while theres connection via islands to everyone so you can attack both via Land and Sea ... and rich islands between players (unreachable with cultural borders)

I don't think we should be too specific with our instructions, but I like the tundra/ice connections. Great way to limit contact while not requiring players to build navy just to reach each other.

Oy so many posts!

Don't have time for a proper response, but my input is I like the (one of fin, exp, india, inca) deal, i agree that pyramids are too bad and i'm cool with them being in, and I prefer not giving too much direction as to the map; Sian's idea is cool but I'd personally prefer to have it be more of a normal type of continent instead of this band of tundra one.

I'll post more later.

In my view EXP and FIN are at about the same power level (the highest one), at least on the maps we've tended to play on recently, and EXP may even be better. People have been kneejerk-banning FIN since I got here (and I thought this was fair at first, but I've gotten better over time and so now I have opinions about things) and leaving EXP alone which is really too bad IMO. If I were playing I would vote for: you can only have at most one of EXP, FIN, INDIA, INCA. I think that wouldn't be more unfair than most setups and pretty fun. Being any of those things is FUN!!

I don't think any early wonders need banning, certainly not Pyramids. lol Pyramids NEVER get built as early as it's possible to build them (i.e. beeline the necessary tech, masonry, and go for it ASAP). All wonder races are essentially secret auctions, about who is willing to give up the most to give up a wonder, and if people are holding back then the wonder is not overpowered. There's only a problem if people literally don't have enough liquidity to bid as much as they'd like to bid, a situation the GLH sometimes approaches.

I would pretty much agree with this with the caveat, particularly for a greens game, that Fin is much easier to leverage than Exp. But I think the blanket Fin ban relates a lot more to as you say, an underdeveloped metagame than it does to a significantly greater strength than other options. And I think putting things like Fin and India/Inca back into games means there are more options for running your economy, so it is less likely that the same sorts of situations devolve time after time.

On timing for GLH vs Pyramids, this of course relates to the fact that the lone non-chop way to accelerate GLH - whipping the lighthouse - comes into play faster than someone can, say hook up stone in most games.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

As far as wonder banning goes, I don't feel the need to ban any wonders, unless we are on an 'islands' map in which case the Great Lighthouse is probably better off being banned.

I'd recommend banning SoZ just becuase that makes the game unfun for everyone else.

After thinking it over some more, me and Sian would like to team up anyway. We're reasoning that if Commodore is interested in dedlurking and slowcheetah recruits a lurker with his excellent updates and natural wit and charm, there'd be no imbalance. We'd just need a fourth player for it. Wouldn't have to be a green player, given that the current 3 teams would be upgraded a little. How does that sound to everybody?

Also, we need a mapmaker. Should we jump up and down and flail our arms a bit, or give adoring kitty stares to someone capable?

:hat: (Ah, the easy wit of an emoticon response wink)

I'm fine with you guys teaming up. Also agree with Dazed about the SoZ that thing's no fun for anyone.
