So, it leads me to believe that everyone will have sucky starts too. Not really, remember how the map was made - they rolled a map, novice's balancing tool moved people starts so everyone's 'sphere of influence' is equal and plako only made sure starts are comparable. So it's not engineered, I expect some people to SIP due to having a passable neighbourhood with no better options. But I do agree that noone will likely have anything stellar around.
And yes, let's settle 1S of the ivory.

Judging by the amount of time NobleGas took to play the save, I'd guess that Novice and Plako gave them something to think (and argue) about too.

Well, we have the save again. I think we will end up settling 1S of the ivory. It's pretty annoying that we don't have any movement to do that enables us to see more of the map and still settle on turn 2. I considered moving 1NW and 1SW to end the turn in that desert hill and see more of the map before settling. But I don't think we can afford to do that on quick speed.
The map is a bit frustrsting regarding these decisions because it'll all come down to luck. See, if we had ended the turn in the forest 1N of where the settler is, we could see more of the north and make an informed decision about wheter settling there would be good. But that also would have meant that we couldn't settle 1S of the ivory on turn 2. So we could end up being lucky or we could end up not being. But it'd be only luck, not an informed decision.
Same thing this turn. If we settle 1S of the ivory and we get a pigs in one of that western grasslands, we have a pretty good capital. But it's pure luck. The same with a pigs showing up in the tile 2N of the ivory. If that happens, we would be unlucky due to not settling on the ivory. No way we could have guessed there was a pigs there.
The only way to make a more informed decision is to waste another turn. But that's too costly. I'd consider it if none of our opponents settled yet. But besides that situation, being 2 turns behind someone is too harsh.
Bottomline, my thoughts for Mist to comment about are:
1. If no opponent settled yet, moving the settler 1NE, 1SW to look things over the desert hill can be a good idea.
2. If someone already settled, go for 1S of the ivory.
3. Warrior probably go 1NE to explore to the north of the river.

Since Dave and Yuri both settled it means 1S of the Ivory it is.
Therefore :
We missed on a plains cow/dry corn combo but there was no way to figure out they are there, so we should be happy for a pretty nice second city location instead.
Also wow at those two incenses, if we ever needed an excuse to go for an early calendar and MoM I can't find any better.
Have queued a worker, but not picked a tech yet. Agriculture?

Yes, agriculture. Can you finish playing the save, Mist? If you can, please go ahead.
Our capital is not astounding, but we have pretty nice expansion possibilities. So, overall, I'm glad. It's a pity about the cows, but there was no way to know they were there.
I have to think about the warrior movement for the next turn. Exploring near the corn/cow site might be best, because that seems to be a pretty good target for an early second city. Good resources, can share a fp farm for instant improved tile with the capital, can help growing cottages. Seems pretty good. But I think settling it coastal might be best. But, anyway, have to explore first.
By the way, sorry if I look like I'm whining about the map. I think it's a good map from what I can see. Just that particular situation was a bit frustrating.
Off to sandbox now!
By the way, do we lose a beaker because I didn't select a tech on turn 1 or that's just a myth?

Btw, this is the perfect capital for my bureaucracy powered monster capital helped by other cities. There's a good city to be settled in every direction!

I think it's best to explore the cow/corn site with the warrior, so I'd move 1SW. I'm saying this because we have the save again.

Moved SW, everyone settled, no other changes. Save passed on.

I think you're in FFH mode - incense is a bad tile. Often not worth working at all, and the worst calendar resource.
