With properly applied whipping, each post-granary point of food can be worth up to or even over 2 hammers

I ran a test with a dry corn and no other food source for each one and just grass forests and they literally finished at the same time, with the same population. Granary first had more food stored, obviously.
Maybe I should try seeing how long it takes to get the next couple of buildings after that.

And if not granary, then sometimes an ORG lighthouse.
Seriously, get your food up.

so, I ran tests and granary first and forge first seemed to get the next couple of improvements out at the same time.... but granary first had higher population (1 higher). So, yes, granary first is superior. Not that anyone but me was wondering

a turn I didn't expect!!
There is a confluence of forces by VultureRoad
I expect no combat - pindicator goes before commodore, so he'll move off. I'm going to move my spear back into vulture road in case pindicator goes on the corn. I think there's a fair chance that commodore pillages it, which is annoying.
I'm whipping the forges - I can whip a forge and get a vulture out with the overflow in VultureRoad. Forge whip in cap goes to... I dunno. I might hold off on the cap whip to overflow into an archer.

Unsurprisingly, there was no battle. I moved the spear into a location where it can kill pindicator's chariot if it gets frisky, but I think it will move off.
I get a vulture next turn - he can't kill the phalanx (well, he can, but he has poor odds), but he should be able to hurt it enough for the archer to kill it... assuming commodore moves in. I doubt he will.
Killed a barb (get a promo), will kill another in another couple of turns.
Pindicator had a HUGE score drop - big enough that I thought at first he'd lost a city... but he just whipped - a 3 pop whip in his cap (settler) and a 1 pop whip elsewhere.
Scooter gained a pop point.

ok - some planning.
I think I can easily set up a fairly sustainable 2 pop whip out of the cap for settlers/workers.
With forge, a whip is 25 hammers.
A settler is 66 and a worker is 40, thus to 2 pop whip a settler, I need to get 16 hammers/food.
I can do that at size 5.
city gives 2 food, 2 hammers
Crab gives 3 extra food
Wheat gives 3 food and 1 hammer
Cow gives 2 food and 2 hammers
The fur will take a food, but give 2 hammers. Thus, at size 5, I make 17 hammers/food, which gets me to 49 hammers after 1 turn, and a 2 pop whip.
And I can hand build a worker in 3 turns. (or 1 pop whip them in 2). But the handbuilding comes when I'm at my happy cap, which is pretty good right now.
I can do much the same in Vulture.

well, pindicator is being irritating, moving his chariot around in my land. I covered the copper, which is the only thing he could move onto and pillage - my guess is that he goes onto a hill and stays there, which pretty much forces me vulture into a city, I think.
No biggie... just annoying.

Hopefully, i can finally chase off Pindicator's chariot...
ok - the image isn't comign through....
The archer is covering my vulture, who has been beating up barbs. Vulture in a forest, unhurt, can handle a chariot without combat promos. Hurt vulture? not so much. But I got a spear in there. the spear will continue to the hill (and, hopefully, no one has an axe waiting for him) Settler coming out will go there...
