the problem with blockades is - as I understand them - you can do huge damage to an opponent's coastal cities even if his naval power is equal to or greater than yours, because there aren't enough different ship types to have the same rock paper scissors game that goes on with land units. eg chariot beats axe which beats spear which beats chariot.

so if you have an enemy trireme blockading your ports, the only way to clear it out is to take a coinflip battle - there's no ship which gets bonuses against triremes.

It's as bad as described as above, except that you're forgetting the +10% bonus to the defending naval unit on coastal tiles, which is basically every naval encounter before caravels fight each other. This pushes the coinflip battle down to ~33% on an otherwise even fight (galley vs galley, trireme vs trireme, etc). So, the blockading boat can just sit there and wreck your coastal economy and the victim has to pay a disproportionally high cost to dislodge the blockade. Just trust me on this one, you never want to have to deal with this.

Well, it seems like we have a bit of a consensus on the settings - what's the etiquette here, do we wait for Commodore to build the map then request a move into our own subforum, or do we move into the subforum while waiting for the map?
