So I had to abandon my crazy settler - first idea. A little sad, but also a relief. This fits my initial game plan of "don't do stupid weird stuff." And from sims I'm pretty convinced this is better- it just grows so fast that I can work mines really easily. I can get 4 cities by turn 50 with decent infra and more comnerce, even with much less chopping.
[SPOILERS] don't call it a comeback [luddite comes back]

Just discovered that there's a banana NW of the plains hill 1W of the deer. I had been planning to settle on the plains hill, but now I'm not sure. The banana tile is still connected to the capital by river, and would have a lot of riverside tiles to cottage, but wouldn't be able to share any tiles with the capital.
So everyone's talking about the loot they got from popping huts (Thoth somehow got three techs!). And I'm over here not having popped a single hut yet.
ha, speak of the devil! Just checked civstats and my score went up from the turn roll. It must have been from popping a hut with my capital's border expansion.
(I was deliberately letting my culture pop that hut because I remember it gives slightly better odds than a scout for getting good stuff).
Just checked and it turns out I popped masonry from a hut. That's... something I guess? I mean, it's worth a nice 138 beakers, but it's also completely useless to me for a long time. But it makes a restart easy, since I won't have any prereq bonus.
Masonry is on the road to Monotheism, so you have the inside track on Judaism. It's not nothing!
