Quote: He would have reined in the use of sabers by non Jedis
I think that may be the first time I've seen it suggested that Lucas would rein in anything
You know he's the guy who gave us a killer asthmatic robot who proficiently used four lightsabers, right?
Grevous was a low point strange villain I would admit, although he scarcely used them proficiently. about 20 seconds until he loses an appendage versus Obi wan? Ren I had such high hopes for... However at least Emo Kylo Ren twitter is seriously good
So, after seeing it the first time, I wrote a kind of 'neither-here-nor-there' review, but really was kind of disappointed, and increasingly so as I processed it and compared it to the originals in the days and weeks following. Curiously, watching it again the other night, I quite enjoyed it (though I still don't think it compares to the originals). I'm just going to chalk this up to the effect expectations can have on enjoyment. That said, this went from being a movie I wasn't that excited to watch again on home release to one I probably will several times (over time), so I guess that's a good thing.

Same here but I did not recover. My conclusion thus far is that there is no need/thrill for me to watch it on the big screen any more, not this one, nor any subsequent episodes. There's just no new ideas, and worse for myself personally, the cinematography failed to impress (no epic space ships and battle nor scenery).

That pretty much sums me up. This was 20+ years after the third one, and neither side added a new ship type, new weapon, etc? I was expected more then x-wing vs tie fighter again.
Another desert planet where the Jedi grew up? To much rehash of the first 3.
I am not paying $16 for 3D again. I will see the next one, but it is now wait for the cheap show. This is now the 10A show, or even the cheap theater.

The
superweapon
was still super cheesy though.
+1
It was the hype and the amazing reviews that makes it seem such a disappointment. It is a solid film that didn't take risk, but pretty average across the board.
Looks like I'm a bit late to chip in, but whatever
I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised in some areas and unpleasantly surprised in others.
I wasn't expecting Finn's performance to be very good from what the trailers showed. He's a good main character. He works well with Poe. They should make the next movie have them as the guys with the most screentime.
Rey on the other hand... this is a minor nitpick, but why is she the only British sounding person on a desert planet filled with gruff wild west types? Her accent was taking me out of the movie constantly. Her insistence on going back to Jakku because maaaaybe someone might pick her up someday just seemed too naive to take seriously.
I was sad that Poe only had 10 minutes of screentime. Phasma had the same problem. They made this cool evil lady with the cool chrome armor and then threw her in the dumpster for a couple minutes. Why?
The scene with the terrible cgi monster things in Han's freighter was pointless. They should have replaced it with a confrontation with the gang leaders or just skipped any fight scene there in the first place.
Kylo Ren is a neat villain. Snoke is not. Gollum might have been scary a decade ago but he isn't nearly as intimidating now.
Why is the main bad guy thing another death star? Why is that alien guy who flew with Lando in Return of the Jedi back? Or the squid guy who said, "It's a trap." Why did they bother throwing in a mini trench run sequence when it couldn't have the same impact without all the build up the original had? (tldr too much nostalgia stuff at the end)
Thank god for x-wings and TIE fighters instead of all those WHATEVERs in episode I-III. (that were extremely more advanced-looking than the 'replacement' starcraft in episode IV-VI....). Also thank god again for less politics and trade negotiations and senate hearings.
I think "It was fine" by itself, and not just by virtue of NOT being like I-III.
My brother said the Snoke was more Voldemort-ish rather than Gollum, hey.
Also, enough with the death stars. It literally makes no sense after 2 fails that evil guys try it again without seriously considering its possible weaknesses. It takes rebels 2 minutes (or hours, cant say I remember) or so to come up with a working plan to try to destroy it, pretty much like previous 2.
